Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

How Recycling effects our carbon footprint

HaydengLLHS

From a very young age I have learned about reuse and recycle, but how many people still use it today. in 2013 Americans generated about 254 millions tons of trash and only recycled 87 million tons, around 34 percent of this trash. This is having terrible affects on the environment. An example of this is that there is an island of floating trash in the ocean about the size of Texas or even double it. This kills so many species in the ocean and traps them forever, they try to eat it thinking it is food. There are many ways you can use waste in a helpful way you could use old toilet paper rolls as holders for items, you could build a composting bin, or just reuse everything, it is simple and saves the environment one plastic bottle at a time.

I was unaware of these statistics, which came as a shock to me. I like your idea of reusing things, and I feel like if more people were to think creatively and use household items that they don't want such as the toilet paper rolls you mentioned in your post and were to reuse them, that would help the environment a lot. For example, at one of my friend's house, I saw that they keep their pasta in old Pringles containers because they're around the same size. If more people were to creatively reuse their trash, it would benefit the environment.
