Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Repurposing things to help hurricane victims

beth_athaide

There have been a lot of major hurricanes and other natural disasters like Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. My family and I went through our house and collected a lot of things and especially clothing that we could donate. Instead of throwing these things in the trash (which creates a huge carbon footprint) we sent them to shelters. According to the EPA, greenhouses gases created by landfills are 50% methane and 50% CO2, both huge greenhouse gases. It also says that methane is "28 to 36 times more effective than CO2 at trapping heat in the atmosphere over a 100-year period." So instead of throwing gently used clothing and other items away, I think we should donate it to those in need in our communities.

I think this is a great idea. This is a great way to prevent increasing your carbon footprint. My family and I donate clothes but not to people who desperately need it. Donating clothes can be one of the ways to decrease carbon footprints and also  benefit the lives of the less fortunate. I like your mention of the dangers of contributing to the increase of greenhouse gases such as methane and CO2.

This is a great idea. I actually live in the area that was affected by Harvey and it is just so sad driving down streets that every house just has so much debris everywhere. I wonder where they will put all of this because like you said that will create a huge carbon footprint. I also have donated clothes and gone to shelters to help sort them to families who need them. That is pretty bad that landfills are that bad of contributors to greenhouse gases, especially since we just had so many hurricanes or natural disasters which cause so much debris to be everywhere.
