Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Long showers (running water and room temperature)

diana-barbu

Analyzing a bad habit of my sister’s, which is taking very long showers/baths, I came to some conclusions that might reduce the home consume. As the bathrooms are usually colder we tend to turn on the heat first and wait until the temperature matches to our preferences, then start to bathe, using warm water as well. What if we would save some warm water in the bathtub without warming up the room first, then start to wash? By doing that we use less heat and water, which means lower carbon footprint. How?
1. As the water is running, the bathroom takes the high temperature from the hot vapes, not needing any additional heat.
2. You can wash yourself only in the saved water and stay as long as you want without harming the environment.

Your idea is very good, having the bathroom take high temperatures from the hot vapes, and it sounds like it would be very efficient, too. In fact, your idea reminds me of the vending machines in Japan. Usually, vending machines are kept cold, like a refrigerator, to keep the drinks and snacks cold, too. To do this, a refrigerator uses a coolant that absorbs the heat in the fridge and this stored heat is eventually expelled out. The people developing these vending machines saw this excess heat as inefficient, so they created a vending machine that has both hot and cold items. For the cold, the coolant takes away the heat, and on the hot items, that excess heat is applied, keeping the food or drinks warm. Using the heat inside the house would be a wonderful idea to save water, rather than have the cold water go down the drain and be wasted. Good job, Diana-barbu!
