It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Reuse & Repurpose >
Hand-me-downs
Handing down things like clothes and toys is an excellent way to reduce waste and reuse materials. For example, in my family, a t-shirt will get passed through all of my siblings, and when it no longer fits the youngest, we donate it, or if its not in good condition, it gets cut into rags for household cleaning.
I'm an only child, so we donate all the clothes I don't fit into to organizations like Goodwill or to friends with younger children. I get about half of my new clothes the same way- from a friend who grew out of them. Doing this drastically reduces the amount of new clothes we buy. This is a great idea, and something more people should consider doing.
Also, people tend to forget about things like peanut butter jars and old soup cans. Finding ways to repurpose things like these will do a great deal of good for the environment.
I have three older siblings and a younger sibling, so my family has always made it a habit of passing down clothes to each other. Rather than simply throwing out clothes we are done with, we also donate clothes to Goodwill and the Salvation Army. My mother takes our old clothes and when she travels to Nigeria, she gives the clothes to children in orphanages. Not only is this great for the environment, but it's also great for society and benefits the poor little children who deserve so much more. Even food packaging, boxes used to ship goods, and bottles can all be reused and repurposed. I think what all of you guys do is great and can all help reduce our carbon footprints.
I have 3 younger siblings, so a lot of my clothes go to them. Since I am the oldest I have to buy practically most of my clothing. My family donates a lot to the goodwill as well, or we find a way to re purpose the item.
I have one younger brother and he gets my hand me downs but only if he likes the clothes I used to wear. If he doesn't want to wear them then we donate the clothes to goodwill or value village.
