It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Recycling in our Communities
What are the best ways we can recycle, reduce, and reuse things in our communities? How can our communities help insure that this happens? One idea would be terracycling and providing more recycling and compost bins and less trash bins.
One of the problems I see is that even when compost and recycling bins are supplied right next to the garbage bins, people throw the wrong items in the wrong bins. This means either that recyclable and compostable things get thrown in a landfill, or workers at the sorting facilities need to spend a lot of time and effort sorting out things that people should have sorted out when they threw it away!
I feel like well designed bins with clear images on them that show what can gfo inside is good. In food courts, compost bins should have examples of what can be thrown in there stuck to the lids of the bins.
Any other ideas?
