Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Repurposing Items In Daily Activities

Did you know that many items that we use can be repurposed for different usages? The three R's that prevent excessive amount of waste production are known as "reuse, reduce, recycle". This technique helps us repurpose objects without immediately subjecting them as waste. For example, if I received a paper bag while shopping, instead of recycling the bag immediately, I could use the paper bag as a recycling bag to collect all of my household recyclables. Then afterwards, I would recycle that bag. In that example, I "reused" the bag, I "reduced" my carbon footprint, and I "recycled" the bag (and the objects inside of it). This is an easy way to practice the three R's and it shows how repurposing items can easily reduce your carbon footprint and help reduce the amount of waste that is on our Earth.

I definitely agree, Alexandra. This is a simple, easy way to reduce, reuse, and recycle in our lives. I think there are more ways we can reduce and reuse, but for water usage. We can take shorter showers and, as said by cotap.org, buy water-efficient home appliances. Also, I think that Bishop O'Dowd does a good job in the greenhouses by using the drip irrigation system and capillary mats to reduce, reuse, and recycle water when growing plants.
