Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Plastic Bags

blackshirekusabod7sr

Plastic bags are a terrible thing for our environment. From my research, as of August 2010, between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags are being used each year worldwide. About  100,000 sea turtles and other marine animals die every year because they either mistake the bags for food or get strangled in them which was said by the Natural Environment. In Australia, 50 million garbage bags end up as litter yearly, and the “plastic soup” patch floating in the Pacific Ocean is twice the size of the continental United States. It is roughly 80 percent plastic, according to The Independent, a British newspaper. This is saying that we need to ban plastic bags.

Plastic bags are a very significant source of plastic pollution and I think that reusing these bags is the best thing we can do right now because fully stopping their production is not very likely to happen because of convinietly cheap they are. We have to start taking this problem seriously and we have to start reusing them.

I think a way to stop pollution when it comes to plastic bags is to change the material of plastic or reuse bags. Plastic can be made of fruits and other nonharmful materials. So if we start making bags out of materials like these this can definitely reduce the amount of pollution on land. Another thing is people can start reusing bags, instead of throwing out old bags to be on the side of the road or in the ocean - we should reuse them so the amount being made will lessen.

I agree on how plastic bags are a terrible thing for our environment. They are harmful to not just animals, but what animals live in too. They are damaging the ocean, and the ocean is home to so many animals. When the plastic gets into the ocean, it's hurting all the animals. One by one those animals are dying. One simple way to get rid of that is to bring reusable bags with you when you go shopping. Like the grocery store. Once you finish shopping instead of getting new plastic bags. Just bring your own. It may seem like a small task, but once everyone is doing it. It can make a huge difference.

I agree with how terrible plastic bags are for the environment. Plastic bags are everywhere. When you go to the beach you might see a plastic bag and just look at it but that plastic bag will kill many fish once it reaches the sea. So next time you see plastic bags pick them up.
