Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Re-purposing and Reusing Everyday Items

There are many ways to reuse and extend the "lives" of items we buy and use. Instead of throwing away a shoe-box, you can use it for storage. You can use Mason jars to hold and organize office supplies like pencils, pens and markers. You can turn a soda box into a place to store canned food like soup. You can use wood crates and turn them into shelves to hold things like detergents, cleaners and towels. You can use wire hangers to hang your shoes. If you know how to sew, you can gather together old fabrics and create a bag or a clothing item. You can use toilet paper rolls to organize wires and cords. Reusing items creates less air and water pollution and results in less hazardous waste. I think that reusing items is great way to save money and help the environment at the same time.

I agree. Repurposing items instead of throwing them away not only helps the environment but boosts creativity. In my house, we also use mason jars to hold supplies. There are also a lot of ideas online on how to repurpose everyday items.

I agree with your statement. Refusing and repurposing everyday items is a fantastic way to save materials instead of buying more things all the time. Using old jars and pots are perfect for organizing office supplies, makeup, and other items. By reusing items, we can reduce the items we buy therefore reducing the amount of packaging that is not environmentally friendly. In addition, we can also reduce the amount of carbon that is being released into the atmosphere by reusing items. According to the Resource Recovery & Waste Management Division, a website dedicated to "Innovative Environmental Solutions", one should avoid heavy packing in order to generate less waste, save energy, and save natural resources. Furthermore, buying in bulk is better for the environment and often cheaper. By doing this, society will be able to lower the rising amount of carbon in the atmosphere and stop unnecessary waste from being generated. Additionally, natural resources will also be saved which is important because our plant has a limited amount of resources that we need to keep from being  harmed and abused. By doing this, we can ensure that future generations will be able to survive and thrive. Next, we should always bring reusable bags to stores and even bring reusable containers to restaurants. Personally, I always carry around a reusable water bottle instead of buying plastic ones in order to reduce unnecessary waste that is harming and killing different habitats and the environment.

I agree. I think reusing is beneficial to everyone. One, we reduce waste that effects other ecosystems (I'm sure we've all seen the pictures of sea life trapped in plastic). Two, we get new(ish) stuff, which in consumer culture is a benefit. And three, we eliminate factory emissions by reducing the number of products we buy. It is all better this way.

I completely agree. There are ways in changing everyday items into things that we can use on a regular base, like storage, pencil holder, glasses. It would be a lot better than just buying stuff that we don't need when we already have it right in front of us.  It would create less waste and help the environment in so many ways. I think that we really need to think about what we are throwing away because it might be useful in the future.

I like to think I reuse many of the plastic, paper, and cardboard I use before resorting to throwing it away either in the trash or recycle. Having a metal or reusable plastic water bottle would be very effective instead of getting a new plastic water bottle every day.  This not only will help the climate change epidemic, but will also save you a lot of money.

I completely agree. There are so many ways to help change the world & we can do that be changing everyday items. I reuse bags, plastic paper, cardboard but if I don't need them then I do my best to put in recycling or trash. Using water bottles is a lot better than using plastic water bottles. Another thing is using mental straws instead of plastic straws it harms manuals and that's one thing we can do to help reduce waste. It will help the environment so much to help reuse and recycle.
