Now It's Time for Action!

All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.

Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?

Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!

My footprint

Vickii

I enjoyed participating in the Stanford University project, it was really interesting.
My ecological footprint was higher than the mean of the Canary Islands.
Now I will try to be more responsible with the environment and consume less energy.

rileymoos

I noticed my carbon footprint was not the amount I expected it to be. My family recycles and buys organic food, but other things that I did not think were very important really effected my footprint. Like leaving the heater on for a month or taking long showers. I found 50 ways to reduce my footprint here http://www.50waystohelp.com/. You should check this website out, it has some great ways to help the environment. Some of these things can benefit your health too. Does any one else have some more ways to easily reduce your footprint?

GraceC100

Good website! It listed many helpful tips to reduce anybody's carbon footprint. I also found these two websites:
http://ehtrust.org/health-and-environme … our-world/

http://greatist.com/happiness/ways-help-environment

One comment I found interesting in the first website was to avoid Styrofoam because it cannot be recycled and it does not break down naturally in the environment. In the second website, it includes many different ways that you could do simple tasks. It also provides encouragement to do those actions in the text.

When I used the online calculator to calculate the amount of CO2 I give off per year I found my number much higher than I thought it would be. I had estimated my carbon footprint would be around the same as the average person living in Texas, I was wrong.  When I had finished calculating all the sections, I went back to find out why my average was so much higher. I found that even though co2 emissions were lower than the average in food, house, and technology. I also found that transportation was the section where my carbon footprint really added up. My family has 17 plane rides in the past year that were at least four hours long if not longer. This section is where my carbon footprint really add up.

krysta-rutherford8231

My carbon footprint is also higher than I thought it would be and it mainly because of home and transportation. Though, food and purchases are my low points, I still have a high carbon footprint. For me I expected to have at least somewhat of a lower footprint. I knew that transportation would kill my footprint, but not that much.

SimonS

Also the same thing for me, transportation raised my carbon footprint a lot, purchases, food and the heating system don't raise the footprint as much as the transportation does. It was quite unexpected, I didn't know transportation could affect it that much.

niko627g

My footprint is very high. I think that could reduce my footprint and not pollute the world .
we dont have care of the planet. We have to take care. Because if we don't take care, we could destroy ourselves.

eva-bou99

Hi parnter!! Good work!

Cduncan3

Hey, everyone my name is Casey. I found out that my carbon footprint is well above the average for Florida. On cause of this is my transportation. Another cause is my home energy. We do not turn out the lights when we leave a room all of the time. Which increases my carbon footprint. In my house we also have a lot of light bulbs. In my house we always keep it cool at 72 F. This increases my CO2 emissions as well. How I plan to reduce my CO2 of home energy is by remembering to turn off the lights when I leave a room. I can also turn the air up to 74 F during the summer, so not to waste energy, If you haven't figured out your carbon footprint yet a good website to use would be http://www.climatecare.org/climate/low-carbon-living/ . They help you find your carbon footprint for air travel, transportation, home energy, and more. They also tell you ways to conserve your heating, electricity, water, and food energy. The first step to reducing your carbon footprint is figuring out which area in your daily life uses up the most carbon.

rachelfaulkenberry

Hi, my name is Rachel. My carbon footprint was 14,453kgs compared to my regions footprint of 15,918kgs. My transportation was my highest footprint total at 5,500kgs. My home was my next highest at 4,370kgs. My family always turns the lights off whenever we leave a room, and we only try to use our air conditioning and heating when it is necessary. However, it appears that we still need to find ways to lower our home footprint. Thanks for the website link! It looks really helpful. Since my transportation uses up the most carbon, I will try and focus on finding ways to reduce this. I drive to school, my sports practices, my friends houses, and all of my clubs. I can find ways to carpool and possibly even walk whenever possible

dhenry0813

Hi, My name is Dylan and transportation was also the largest part of my total. This was because of how many international trips i took this year. I agree that turning off the lights when your not in a room will greatly help reduce your total. Personally I try to turn off lights when I leave a room and I believe that these greatly help reduce your totals.

My total foot print is 5,753 kgs of Co2 per year, and the average for Guatemala is 1,954 kgs. This means that I'm above the average, and that I need to work more in my transportation, home, and food habits to decrease this number. I'm going to be aware of my actions, and I'm going to put a lot of effort improving my footprint to be under the average. The part that I most need to work on is in transportation; this is because my school is really far from my house, so my dad has to drop me down and pick me up every day. I will try to decrease this by trying to use another type of transportation on the weekends.

Simsic

My carbon foot print is 8948kgs,  its interesting because i tought i would have less, but then i started thinking and came to conclusion that its becase i drive to school and back every Day and thats more than 80 km, normal person drives a lot less, but i think public tranport has less polution that what they set for it.  Environment is really inportant so people can live better.

ChaseO

I agree with you Casey, the first step to reducing your carbon footprint is to identify what areas you expend the most energy in, and what areas can be reduced the easiest. Seeing that a lot of your carbon footprint comes from your home makes me think of a very important point. How much does your location in the world effect your carbon footprint? I thought of this because where I live (NC), keeping the temperature at 72 degrees year-round wouldn't be a very large expense, however keeping the air at 72 in a place like Florida would be much much more resource intensive.

dancaruso

Hi Casey, My name is Daniel. Our Carbon Footprints are very different. My Home life was the highest and my Transportation was the lowest. My Home life was above average because of the A/C and the lights that we leave on. My transportation is low because I don't have a car.

eyanbowers

Our footprints were pretty similar Casey. Like you said, an easy way for everyone to help with their carbon footprint is to be conscious and careful with how they use their lights, appliances, and air conditioning. But unfortunately, we both have high transportation footprints that are difficult to deal with because in my region at least you almost have to have a car just because of how the highways space everything out. So that's hard to reduce without spending lots of money on a new more efficient car and that's not something everyone can afford to do to reduce their footprints.

polychronis01

Hello everyone!! My name is Polychronis and i am from Greece! I live in Makrochori and i am so excited because i can chat with people around the world.
Well my total carbon footprint would be lower than the average person in Greece because is 4490 kgs of CO2 per year, compared to
an average of 9047 kgs for Greece. Specially for transportation 249 kgs, for home 2277 kgs, for food 1826 kgs and for purchases 139 kgs.
I wait your critique or your comments!!

mariecurie

Hello, I'm Maria, from Valencia, Spain. I'm very exited because I can speak with different people around the world. So, my total footprint is lower than your, It's 3685kgs of CO2 per year. I never travel and my family grow a lot of fruit and I think that it's the cause. Anyway, I want to contaminate less because of I'm reading this website. What's else, on other hand, your house looks like very enviorement unfriendly, you ought to improve it. Good luck! You can. [IMG_20151114_134203](//muut.com/u/footprint/s1/:footprint:AuYa:img_20151114_134203.jpg.jpg)

konstantinos0

Hi Polychronis I am from Greece too. Nice to meat you.

harpas

Hi. My name is Harpa and I live in Iceland.

My footprint for transportation was very high. I got 10914 kgs but in my region it is 2624 kgs. It´s because I travelled to Colorado USA and the flight was 8 hours each way. If we want to travel to other countries, we have to fly because we live on an island in the middle of the ocean. But in Iceland I always walk or ride a bike to school and to other activities. I try to walk as much as I can, because cars pollute a lot.

In my family we have to travel a lot in our cars for school, sports, and work. However we try to carpool as much as possible especially for games that are far away. When I am not able to carpool with someone else i try to have another person carpool with me no matter when i go to school or to a sports event.

lucypierce

I play sports and have to drive to school everyday, so I always try to carpool. Almost everyday to school I take another person with me, and I travel with three others to my sports practice three times a week. Since we're carpooling, we reduce the amount of cars and reduce the carbon.

My name is mitchell i am from mooresville, NC, United States. Im 14 years old.  My total footprint is 13,209 kgs of CO2 compared to an average of 15,918 kgs and 3,791 kg 9=8,358 Ibs) worldwide. Today, we use transportation such as buses cars etc. I think we need to start using bikes or walk to places that are a lot closer to us to get to places.

caroline_g

I really like and agree with your solution. smile

anthony16

I think we should all start to walk to places that are close to us

kaliegh

My carbon footprint was pretty high when it came to transportation. I drive/ ride a lot every day whether its to the mall, to grab food, and to do a lot of unnecessary things. now that summer is coming up, i believe my friends and i should ride bikes, walk more and only use car when travling far places.( may vary depending on the person).

olaf1214debbie

I agree with you. because I go a lot of places through out the week. more places when im with friends

esai

I agree #Deeeeaaaad

esai

I agree I think you should walk or ride bikes more then using a car driving. I feel like you should just walk or some until you get average at least and I think I should drive more then I walk places so I could get a average footprint.

mb007

My footprint was high when it came to transportation too. Carpooling will help too. If you and a friend know you're both going to the same place, might as well save some gas and go together. Also, I read that keeping your tires full inflated, changing your oil regularly as needed, and other automobile maintenance helps preserve energy too!

mpk159

Hi I am a student from Guatemala that studies in the American School of Guatemala. I took the carbon footprint survey and I believe that my results were too high. I believe that some of my results were kind of inaccurate but I would like to know some solutions to decrease my carbon footprint to help the environment.

My results were: [Screen Shot 2016-09-28 at 7](//muut.com/u/footprint/s2/:footprint:QJkl:screenshot20160928at7.43.06pm.png.jpg)

The highest contributor to most people's carbon footprint is transportation, which seems to be the case for you. So instead of driving a regular automobile, you could choose to take public transport. http://www.apta.com/mediacenter/ptbenef … fault.aspx
The link above lists the benefits of public transport, which includes ways to reduce your carbon footprint.
The second highest contributor to your carbon footprint is food. You could decrease your carbon footprint in this way by decreasing the amount of meat, cheese, and eggs you eat. If you move towards a more vegetarian diet, than your carbon footprint will decrease. Th link gives tips on how to decrease your carbon footprint through dietary decisions.
http://www.greeneatz.com/foods-carbon-footprint.html
The next biggest contributor is your home. You can reduce your carbon footprint by changing your lighting system from what it is currently to an LED one. You can also lessen your carbon footprint by doing simple things like turning the lights off before you leave a room, or not forgetting to shu t the fridge door.
Your lowest contributor is purchases. You can reduce this by upcycling your shoes and clothes and buying local things.
https://carbonfund.org/reduce/
The link above has many ways to reduce your carbon footprint.
Hope this helps!

Im Andrew i'm from Mooresville North Carolina in the USA and im 15. My total average was 23,645 and most of it came from my transportation. I kinda knew my numbers would be a little high but I didnt think it would be my transportation that was so high. something I can do to make my number go down is I could use more energy effient things like not take long showers.

Dariansoto

Your number was higher than mine

Kyleia13

Kyleia McColley

I am From Mooresville Nc United states, My carbon footprint was very interesting to me because I wanted to see how I would average compared to everyone else. My total footprint was 8,292 which is I think about average, I saw some higher than mine and a couple lower. The majority of my footprint came from transportation. My results where normal to me I wasn't surprised, but I did learn a lot of how everything you do has a impact. My future actions will be to try to decrease my footprint by walking more.

1017301

The average in the united states is around 17,000 so yours is actually really low

angusthegreat

It is really valuable to learn these things

betadavidsd

Hello, Greetings from Iceland! My Results are way above the average in Iceland. The average is about 7.000 footsteps but my result were 16.893 footsteps. The highest number was in the transportation category. I fly a lot because my sister lives in Italy and when me and my friends meet up we like to drive around and going on road trips. The number i got from transportation was 13.642 all the numbers in the other category´s were lower then the average. I try not to waist food or electricity, so the numbers there are alright. I have to walk and cycle more, because the pollution in cars and airplanes is way to much.

Devin_h

I'm very surprised with how low my transportation was I can't tell if it's just because I'm riding my bike to most places or if it's because I don't go out that often

erline_94

I got low in transportation too. Sadly I do not go out not often and my parents drive me to go the place that I want to go after all.

Aedkeh

Yeah my transportation was pretty low to mostly becuase I don't travel much expect for sports.

Bowmanhughes

I have high in transportation. My school is about 10-15 minutes away and going back and forth adds up. As well as my friends houses are kinda far as well so everything just added up.

savagekid22173

Not really enough information but this is a very nice try!

andrewreid

Im really high in transportation but extreamly low in purchases. Then again, I don't buy that many things. Good for you not using a car all the time though!

1508837

That's amazing how you ride your bike most places, I wish I could do that! Unfortunately my city isn't the most bike friendly therefore I usually have to ride in a car to get to most places. Which caused my transportation to be quite high. Keep up the good work!

avi1562

my transportation was very low because i only ride the bus and i dont really go places

carolyn10273

i have a very low transportation  also but it is mostly because i do not travel as much    and i walk to most of my friends houses and rarely drive to places on the weekend

767177

I have a high transportation because I go out often which most likely puts mine above yours. This response doesn't really give all of the required information about your carbon footprint but it is nice to see that your transportation is low, I envy that.

Ak12

My total footprint was 17,481,461,255.
This shows that I need to improve lifestyle changes to help reduce my footprint.

is_doge_illuminati

ummmmmm.. why do i think you tried to get a high carbon footprint on purpose. ........

jearbfljljggpigaepigvsfi

Who are you?

mariapaula

I was able to see and understand that the way that I am living has a huge impact in our world. Now I'll try to change this and do things that are going to help to preserved the environment.

Juan_Carlos

In my opinion my carbon footprint is something over on the average Spanish, but this is because my house is big enough and we use lots of light.
In addition to this we tend to eat much meat and this also greatly increases the amount of carbon emitted. I think that the reach 1000 kg of C02 a year is "impossible".
The only thing we can try is to exponentially reduce the amount of C02 that we issue, since climate change is real and we need to slow down it.

freydisleifs

My name is Freydís and I live in a small town in Iceland. I live about 2km from my school and I usually drive or carpool with my mom. When the weather is nice I walk. My carbon footprint is quite low when it comes to home, food and purchases but when it comes to transportation I am way above average. The reason for that is I travel a lot. This year I've been on 8 flights and that is what raises the number to 11.602 kgs. I love traveling and I cannot see myself stopping that anytime soon. The question is just if I can fly a bit less often f.ex if I want to go to Europe, take a short flight and then train to other countries but unfortunately more eco friendly transportation is more costly.

sergiopcc

Hello, my name is Sergio and I’m from Spain. My footprint is about 20,000kgs, but that’s why this year I have flown by plane twice and I live a little far from the school. Also, we like to eat meet and, in summer, we use a lot the air conditioning. But hereinafter I will do all that is possible to reduce my footprint.

yojanvosse

My footprint is 7000kgs.
I am from Spain.
My footprint is up of average of Spain,  because I flew with plane and I live 16km away the school.
I don’t eat many meat and I haven’t air conditioner.

marsalavinuesa

Hi, I'm Mar, from Denia, Spain.
My footprint is 15217 kgs,  is so upper, but I traveled 3 times to Italy to visit a familiar, one of this times, I went in car, for do a road trip.
My footprint is up of averafeof Spain.

mario_tomas

My footprint is less thant the average because I go all the places with the bike and I d'ont eat a lot of meat. My House is not so big so I don't use so much the heater. I think that we have to change because this problem affects us all and the world was changing for evil

isabelm123

the world is not evil. We are good and you should try to create harmony and peace. Be zhen dude. Life is going to be okay.

isabelm123

My score was 18,683. That is definitely above the average. I know that I can do more to help the earth that I don’t. I can try to ride my bike in more places and buy less things. And I don’t need to be charging my phone for 8 hours at a time. I think that a lot of the time I am just lazy so I drive my car short distances that I could easily ride to. I definitely have a carbon footprint that I should try harder to get rid of.

skylararena

My average was a total of 3,153,, way lower than yours. I don't know how yours was so high but I hope it improves over time.

skylararena

Mine was 3,153 but I don't know what yours is... I hope that this improves but I can't see your total footprint so you could be lying.

KMSR

Nice job using a different way of transport

CharlyM

My footprint is 16,327 which is about 1,000 higher than North Carolina's average but most of my points come from transportation so I think that your making a good choice in taking a bike everywhere, that could definitely help everyone reduce their carbon footprint.

kevynr

Hi Mar, my carbon footprint is 19,143 kgs, and I travel 2 times a year to a place far from mine in a car, I think everybody should use buses and bikes to get places because it's cleaner than having thousands of cars emitting toxic fuels into the air, do you agree with this strategy to make this world a better place?

carliem64

I think more people should ride bikes and not eat as much meat like you and we need to get off our phones and go out and do things like ride bikes.

kevynr

Hi Freydís, I'm very glad you're carbon footprint is low, I love traveling too especially to new places but that yields the result of my 19,143 kgs of carbon emitted. I often travel and purchase a decent amount of things so I'm finding ways to lower my footprint. Would riding buses and bikes and making them affordable and accessible to different people help lower everyone's carbon footprint. Do you agree with this strategy?

12104097

Hi, My name is Seth, From North Carolina USA.
My total footprint is 10,021 kgs, it is Lesser but i haven't traveled that much. My footprint is Less that the average in my region

12104097

Hi Mar, my carbon footprint is 10,021 kgs, and i have only traveled once this year not very far from my state by car, I think that if people take the time to keep track of what they did and where they went then their carbon footprint would be lower.

zaydam

My carbon footprint was less than average as well.  I think that it is good that you are doing as much as you can to save energy.  Riding your bike saves a lot and it is also good exercise.

Matte768

My carbon footprint is somewhere in the 20's I know, its bad but Im working on ways to help improve it.

stiss

Thats good that it was lower than your region, keep up the good footprint

zaydam

Your footprint is the average of our footprints in our region.  Everywhere is different though because it is the average of Spain as well.

codei

Thats really good to keep your carbon footprint lower than the average.
