All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.
Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?
Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!
Now It's Time for Action >
people not caring
a lot of people waste cause they either don't know what their dong or they do know what their doing they just don't care we got to work together to make it a better environment for the country
I LIKE THE WAY YOU THINK
I agree with you! I think that people don't care about the environment.
I like the way you think to.I see people not caring all the time and everyday
I agree with you. I have changed school districts twice and with each district, there is a different waste management program. Most schools have the three bins of waste, recycle, and compost, but not all schools have proper enforcement. Thus, I also agree that laziness is a huge factor in people wasting resources. Sometimes its just too hard for someone to walk the additional 5 feet to the recycling bin to throw away their empty plastic water bottle.
I do agree that some people do not know that what their doing is harming the environment but simply being unaware is a major cause of environmental problems caused by humans. Education about the environment and how our actions impact various ecosystems is not always available. I live in Ghana, Africa and have many cousins that go to local schools and the environmental sciences is not part of their syllabus or even their curriculum. Many of them do not even know of Global Warming and how by burning their garbage outside their houses weekly effects the environment and allows for carbon admissions. It is culture and a conventional habit to throw waste on the floor and burn garbage. Therefore I believe that the greatest difficulty concerning the betterment of the environment is sending a message that transcends all cultures and traditions. Educating others not only in school put through media, public advertisements, and even in verbal exchanges will allow for people to truly care.

Slimshainy,
I so agree with you when you say people waste and they don't know what there doing.I think when people get/buy food they should only get what they know what they can eat.Like say there's these people at a restaurant and they order to much food and then only eat half of it. There are people in this world who could use that food and they should know that, the food they had just wasted could have saved someones life from starvation or could of feed a family who cant afford food for there family. This world has so many people who could care less about the environment sadly..The people in this world should step up to there plate and help out because sooner or later our environment will brake down and we wont be able to do anything about it.
I agree with you; people just seem to not really care about the consequences of their actions or just expect someone else to pick up after them and clean up their messes, but it's not that easy with all the stuff we have going on in the environment. Hopefully this activity will get more people to think about what they're doing and inspire them to help out and/or care a little bit more about the world, because with the direction we're heading right now, sadly, we'll need the change. Even if it's a slight one.
This is a global situation; many people are choosing to ignore what's happening around them and are acting as if there isn't a problem with the environment. Another problem though, is that not all countries have campaigns and ads that make the population aware of the problem that's happening. Living in Ghana it's incredibly difficult because you are surrounded by trash; the beaches are covered in trash, to the point where you can't swim in the ocean, and the streets contain piles of waste. If each person would spend two minutes of their time looking after themselves and picking up the piece of trash that they just threw on the ground in the garbage, our planet would be cleaner. We can't live anymore in a society where we depend on others to do our dirty work and expect our actions to not have consequences. We need to wake up and see what’s really happening right in front of your faces, either we choose to do something positive about it and make a better future for other generations or we continue like this and end up with garbage everywhere and no clean ecosystems. The choice is ours to make and we have to make the right now.
I agree. I mean yes people choose to ignore it and we cannot force them to see it but in reality they might see it more if people who believe in helping the environment speak up more and try to get people to help out more
Mercedes makes a great point in that people need to realize the consequences of their actions. I think most people know that they should recycle or put their garbage away, but do not think their actions make much of a difference and consequently do nothing about it. But listening to how you live in Ghana and other personal stories would help people conceptualize how dirty the entire planet has become and how much more garbage will cover the world.
Lauren I agree with you I think all the stories would help people

Exactly!
so true!
Yes it is
I agree, people definitely have stopped caring about the planet because of laziness and not enough knowledge about our changing planet. People now just expect others to help fix the world so that don't have to do anything. In my opinion, this problem is mainly caused by technology because it is only growing and expanding causing technology to do more and more for other people so they expect others to do everything for them instead of doing it themselves. For example, most people won't bother recycling, composting, or even getting a paper bag instead of a plastic bag or even better bringing their own reusable bag. Which just increases the total amount of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere and oceans.
Another reason people don't care is they simply don't know enough about what's going on around them to take action. For example, someone might know what climate change is but they won't specifically know what it terrible causes it has on our planet or exactly what causes climate change to occur which leads to that person to think that it's not that big of a d eal and doesn't deserve their or anyone else's constant attention. But in reality climate change and helping the environment deserves everyone's constant attention in order to fix or just level out the mistakes we have caused which can only be accomplished if everyone were to realize how much of an impact they and others have made to our planet by not caring enough. We only have one Earth and if everything happening now just increases then at some point we won't even have the chance to fix it.
I agree with you fully!
Many people do not understand how their daily routines and habits can affect the earth.
A simple and common example is recycling. Many people throw away recyclables all day long. Water bottles, paper, soda cans, etc. They all get tossed because of carelessness. Into landfills they go. There needs to be some action taken to get people to recycle. For example, the government, local, state or national governments, should implement laws that require recycling. It should be a punishable act for not doing so.
In addition, you said that people know, but they do not care... littering. People know this is wrond by common sense. Yet, they still chose to toss cigarette butts out the car window, or any trash for that matter. These people get away with it. There is not enough regulation of these things.
This is very true. Many people choose to waste and not take care of things because they are lazy and don't know enough about how they're actions affect the planet. If more people became aware of how little things like recycling, composting, and picking up after yourself really do make a difference in the world, I think more people would contribute.
