All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.
Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?
Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!
Now It's Time for Action >
Can I really make a difference?
Many times the issues people have with environmental problems, is they can't see their impact, good or bad. So when someone recycles a plastic water bottle, they don't see what happens to it. It doesn't really hit home. We need to change that. We need to show to the world, the negative impact we are having on the environment, but also the ways we can make a positive one. Because for most people they see the problem as too large, unsolvable, and not affecting them. This is where a cultural shift needs to take place.
As for my behaviors, my biggest problem was transportation. I love to travel, I enjoy seeing brand new things. So I don't know if I could honestly tell you I would cut out the traveling from my life. But what I can do is limit the unnecessary. I don't need to drive myself everywhere, I am capable of walking, I can take more public transportation, and carpool whenever possible.
I really agree with you. My life is so environmentally ineffective, that I feel as though even if I try and make a positive change, I'll fail. I guess this also kind of stems from my personal context as I spent most of my life in South East Asia and now West Africa, where in both places though there is a lot of greenery, never really emphasised recycling or environmental reform. Similarly, my biggest issue is transportation as well. Having family all over the world certainly doesn't help the environment. Then what can I do? I mean if I make marginal changes? Do I really make a difference? One thing I could do is maybe cut down on my family's plastic intake, especially when doing grocery shopping by using reusable cloth bags instead. Nonetheless I'll just wait and see what happens by doing so.
I can understand how you may feel that one person does not contribute enough and make the world a better place, however taking action to help the planet is better than doing nothing. Learning how much you impact your planet through your carbon footprint can inspire you and the others around you to change their habits for the good. It will take time for something to change for the better, that is why if you spread word of the consequences of global warming people will try to live a cleaner lifestyle. Some could say it could lead to a domino effect of more and more people trying to make their future generation and planet a better place.
The government is now increasing the amount of climate policies. As a result of these policies it may influence people to live a healthier lifestyle for the earth. If America decides to accept that global warming is a problem its citizens will become more aware of it. If we teach our future generations about the consequences of global warming, it may influence them to take action against these atmospheric problems and help our planet . Finally, do not doubt yourself; you may be one person, but one person can make a huge difference as proven by many politicians and inventors.
