Now It's Time for Action!

All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.

Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?

Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!

A great way to help the environment it to carpool! Carpooling can save us money, time, parking costs, oil, and energy. However, on top of that, we can reduce our carbon footprint. I always carpool on my way home from school. It’s so easy and fun. All you have to do is find someone that lives near you and set it up. Now, there are even carpooling websites to help you find a ride. If just one person does this it would make a difference, but think about millions of people carpooling. The roads would be much less crowded, and more importantly we would be reducing our carbon footprint! If you don’t already carpool, try it sometime. If you do, tell your friends and family! Good Point! Although I ride my bicycle to and from school each day, I always carpool with my teammates to various events for school sports. It's a great thing, having about 3 or 4 cars transporting an entire team, as opposed to about 16 cars, each only transporting one player. Students and employees should carpool more often because it's easy and it's so beneficial, as you have already mentioned. Reducing the amount of cars on the road would drastically cut down on exhaust emissions.

Big cities tend to exemplify this. More cars on the road means more emitters, and higher amounts of traffic could make a five minute trip's worth of a running engine turn into thirty. Also, in less obvious reasons, carpooling can give you a break from the stress of driving each day, and will also provide you with some company during your commute.

I agree with both of you! In the United States, transportation takes up one third of all our greenhouse gas emissions, which is why limiting the amount of carbon released through transportation is so crucial. I found your point about large cities to be especially interesting. It made me consider the other forms of transportation used in these cities. I think public transit is another great form of limiting the greenhouse gas emissions in the category of transportation. By switching to public transit for only one day, you can save about 20 pounds of carbon dioxide from being emitted! That means that in a whole year you would've saved 4,800 pounds of carbon dioxide. This will surely make you feel confident in your personal contribution to limit greenhouse gas emissions.
Not only does public transit save our earth, but it is also fast and efficient! Buses, trains, trams, etc. are all cost effective and you can avoid the stress of having to drive yourself around a cro wded city! Such a simple lifestyle change could save our earth! Doesn't that make you want to make the switch?

Good point. I completely agree with all of you! Transportation is a major part of our greenhouse gas emissions. If we can cut down less drivers on the road, this will cut down the amounts of carbon dioxide let into the atmosphere. This is a really easy way to contribute to making the world a better place because you can have fun while doing it. Carpooling is an overall very efficient way of limiting the amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Great ideas! Transportation is definitely a huge contributor to global warming. I carpool pretty much everywhere I go, but I wonder if this is still helping global warming enough. Maybe if everyone started riding their bikes to school, we could really cut down on carbon dioxide emissions. This might not be possible for some people however, in which it would make sense to carpool or drive where they are going.

In the future, I hope that scientists invent a car that is 100% carbon dioxide emission free. That would benefit the world immensely. Airplanes are also emit a very large amount of carbon dioxide into the air. If scientists could invent a fuel that didn't need to be burnt off as fast, global warming might taper slightly. The main point of global warming is almost to find a cure for it. We can work together to reduce our output of carbon dioxide into our precious planet.
