Now It's Time for Action!

All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.

Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?

Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!

Cause and Effect: Coral Reefs

Think of a world where the oceans are too warm for coral to grow in. Where tropical island communities can no longer create a tourist economy because there are no natural coral attractions. This is not a world I'd like to contribute to. Global warming must be stopped to protect one of the worlds most delicate and important ecosystems. If global temperates continue to rise and tropical storms continue to grow in severity, our world's coral reefs will be decimated. Not only are these ecosystems important visually and economically, but they are important to those in the medical profession as well. The rich biodiversity of plants and marine species in these ecosystems may be home to pharmaceutical medicines and cures. Now is the time to act, and protect these ecosystems.

That is a very intriguing point, Skye. Just like Joni Mitchell says, "You don't know what you've got 'till its gone." I feel that it is the duty of our generation to stress the importance of every little component of our biosphere, every seemingly reasonless ecosystem. Far too many humans have the mindset that 'if it is not benefiting me, I don't care about it', and they completely disregard the significant role ecosystems such as coral play in things as major as our economy, like you mentioned.
We have hardly scratched the bountiful surface of our planet, and all of the wonders in store could be lost in an instant if we let this global warming issue get out of control. Clues to the cures for catastrophic diseases could be lurking somewhere off the coast of the Caribbean islands, but how will we discover them if our acidifying ocean puts precious calcifying organisms at risk? It would be just dandy if there was a big red button that magically made extra CO2 disappear, but that is not the case.
We must work together as one team, one race, to see the state of our planet  and start anew with our ways. Green is the new black, and we should probably start acting accordingly. First off, we should finally take note of what has been drilled into our brains since elementary school: the 3 R's! Reduce, Reuse and Recycle is the new motto. Reducing our use of CO2 emitting transportation such as cars, and taking a bike or walk instead, will make a huge difference if practiced often. Reusable bags, bottles and containers are so, so simple to use and so much better for the environment. Lastly, recycling can become a fantastic habit if we put just an ounce of effort into it. See how easy it can be to undo our damage? I believe in our world and its ability to change; that in even the teeniest coral reefs, all of their potential and wonders, can and will be spared.
