All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.

Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?

Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!

More Fun and Less Carbon

carolinec18

Having another person in the car with you isn't just fun but also does the environment a great favor. By carpooling with just one other person we are saving an estimated 26 pounds of carbon from being released into the atmosphere. Transportation accounts for 30% of the greenhouse gasses in the United States. Burning a gallon of gasoline in an average car engine adds nearly 20 pounds of CO2 directly into the atmosphere. If your gas tank holds 15 to 18 gallons you have released 350 pounds of CO2 every time you have used a full tank of gas. Driving is also a large expense. Gas prices have risen and continue to rise higher, not to mention costs for tolls and parking. The number of people who carpool has decreased by half since 1980, and only 8% of commuters currently carpool. Carpooling can greatly decrease our carbon footprint, and on top of that you may enjoy having someone along for the ride.
