All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.
Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?
Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!
Now It's Time for Action >
Think Bright
Do you want to change the world? Start by changing a few light bulbs. If every household in the United States replaced one regular incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL bulb) we would prevent 90 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions. CFL bulbs use only a third of the energy as incandescent bulbs, and could save enough energy to light over 2.5 million homes for an entire year. On top of that, CFL bulbs last ten times longer. These bulbs also produce 70% less heat so they are safer to operate and can reduce energy used to cool homes. The only inconvenience to using CFL bulbs is they contain a small amount of mercury, which can cause health problems if ingested in large amounts. It is important to be mindful of this and recycle CFL bulbs after they are used. For more information you can visit http://environment.about.com/od/greenli … _bulbs.htm
Both CFL and LED lights are low energy lights that use less than 20% than a regular light bulb and lasts 15 times longer but LED lights offer greater overall savings using less energy and can last longer than 60,000 hours. LED lights are the choice of the future because they are constantly making improvements and fittings, so for now using CFL lights will do. CFL lifespans are 6,000-15,000 hours. They are much cheaper than regular bulbs that only last 1,000 hours, and would help the environment and your bank account right away. By swapping to CFL bulbs you would cut your energy wastage by 75%. Even though going around your house and swapping bulbs takes awhile, it will definitely make a difference.
