All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.
Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?
Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!
Now It's Time for Action >
Shorter Shower Times
I am willing to face the problem of my overly-long showers. I shower every day, and I understand many people do not have this luxury, and that reducing the number of days that I shower each week would make the biggest change in my water usage. I considered doing this, but I decided that I cannot say I am really ready for this commitment. Between sports and school, I don't feel comfortable going a day without a shower. I am ready, however to make two changes. The first is to wash my hair only every other day. Washing my hair is a time-consuming chore of my shower and cutting it out makes my showers around 5 minutes shorter, and reduces the amount of soap that must be removed from the water during purification. Also, I've heard that it's healthy for your hair to allow its natural oils to soak in rather than stripping them away with shampoo every night. The second change is to take room-temperature showers. Doing this will make me less likely to stand in the running water, doing nothing. This will also be a factor that decreases my shower time, and will reduce the amount of energy that I use to heat my shower water. I predict that these small changes will impact my carbon footprint, and they won't be so terribly unbearable that I cannot stick to them.
Hi Christina O.
I am also ready to make changes in my shower habits, but also don't feel comfortable not showering everyday because of sports, school, and other physical activities. I like the challenges that you are taking and will try to take them too. I have also decided that once a week I will take a cold shower to reduce the amount of hot water that I use per week. I encourage you and others to take this challenge as well. Although warmer showers are much more enjoyable cold showers are not unbearable and will probably help reduce your shower time as well. Just some thoughts.
