All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.
Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?
Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!
Now It's Time for Action >
Unplug, Sleep, Shutdown! (new)
An action that I am willing to work on in order to help reduce my carbon footprint is to turn off or put my laptop on sleep mode. I use my laptop daily, because I use it for school work. I leave it running throughout the entire day until I go to sleep. Most of the time, I forget, am too tired, or too lazy to switch the power mode. This action can be easily fixed within a matter seconds. According to http://www.reducingcarbonemissions.org/ … als#item13 I found out that if you leave on your computer on the entire day daily, than it would use more than 1,000 kilowatts of electricity yearly! In addition, you should set your screensavers as nothing, so extra and unnecessary energy is not being wasted. Not only does turning laptop/computers on sleep mode or shutting it down prevent freezes, but it also saves energy and electricity over time. Likewise, unplugging devices such as printers, fax machines, copiers, laptop chargers, cell phone chargers, speakers, etc. that you are not using will affect your environment and amount of CO2 released. Oft en, people say that they do not have the time to unplug all of the appliances; however, a solution could be power strips. This way, you can plug all of your gadgets and simply turn on and off the switch when you are using or leaving them. With all of our knowledge and technology in today’s world, an even easier way has been provided for you. There are power strips available to set your electronica for an alarm or on a timer mode. This will not only help you remember as well as saving your electricity and thus, reducing your carbon footprint emission.
Great post! You're right, these small actions can save so much energy in the long run. I loved your idea about the power strips. I've never thought of using them in order to conserve time and energy. Keep the great ideas coming!
Hi Allyson,
I really enjoyed your post. My school gives students computers to keep for class. I definitely understand what you are talking about. I never really thought about turning off my computer or putting it in sleep mode. This would help save the battery which I am constantly charging. You gave some great facts and ideas about reducing your carbon footprint. Even the small things like unplugging chargers can make a big difference. Great job!
I agree with your post because I do the same thing.
I think is a good idea to not keep things plugs in for your carbon footprint to be high up. If you unplug before you leave for work or school and not plug it until later at night. It also lowers the amount of Carbon you are using.
Hey Allyson, I really liked your post you brought up some really great points and facts. I too would be willing to turn off my laptop or put it on sleep mode. I do this with both my school laptop and my home laptop If I started to turn both off I probably could reduce my carbon footprint a decent amount.
