All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.

Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?

The use of batteries

luciagomezcasais

Who has not ever heard of the high contamination of batteries?

We are very worried by the lack of information  that people have about these objects.
Batteries are devices through reactions within, transform chemical energy into electrical energy. This process in itself, does not cause any damage or consequence but the problem comes when people get rid of these objects when these do not work and deposit  its anywhere.
Most people dump batteries into unsuitable containers or even left outdoors. This causes its cover may deteriorate and its main components (mercury, cadmium, magnesium and nickel) can go out causing ground contamination and health problems in humans.
These components are really dangerous for the planet. For example, mercury is a toxic element that really can cause major human diseases such as deafness.

You don“t take such a joke this information and start acting.Deposit the batteries in the appropriate container!

I completely agree with you. Batteries are a very common item in anyone's everyday life and people don't think about what they can do to the environment. I will admit that I am guilty of not disposing of batteries properly simply because I just do not think about it. Many people don't know that batteries can be harmful to the environment because it is not something that is talked about very often. I think that the proper disposal of batteries is something very important that people, like myself, can easily apply to their own lives.

Hi! I am Emma from China.
I strongly agree with you. Even though batteries are not harmful in our daily life, but when the chemicals go out when they are done, it will cause a lot of problems like pollution in water, in soil and so on. When people or animals eat or drink something with that harmful chemicals, it may cause a lot of problems. I think chemicals in the batteries are like the poison!
One way we are using these days is garbage classification but in some countries it seems does not work very well. I am considering can we have some other specific solutions for batteries?
