Now It's Time for Action!

All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.

Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?

Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!

Around 1,500 soda cans are thrown away every second. Billions of people world wide are fans of these fizzy carbonated drinks. Although I'm not a big fan of soda many members of my immediate and extended family are. Two years ago we started collected all the cans of soda and were shocked by the amount of empty cans we collected. Around thirty other family members and I got together and chose a person to bring the cans to a recycling company. Now these cans that would have otherwise been collecting by the masses in landfills are being reused for new purposes. I think that recycling objects like soda cans is great especially when your doing it with other people. We check to make sure each other are recycling and are beginning to throw away less and less recyclable materials.

Recycling aluminum cans is a great idea! It may seem like a small action, but it has a big impact. Recycled aluminum uses 95% less energy manufacture than new aluminum. We can increase the recycling rate by placing more recycling centers to increase convenience. Curbside access recycling centers are also another option.

I think this is very true. My family just started regularly recycling around a year ago, and now that we've started, I see how much trash we actually accumulate. Recycling helps decrease the amount of trash sent to landfills and greatly helps the environment. Curbside recycling should become more common to encourage more people to recycle.

Wow! I am very surprised by the number of aluminum cans that are thrown away each second. My family has been recycling for many years, and over time, we have become more successful. Even though many areas do have recycling picked up every so often, it is not frequent enough. Also, some areas such as the suburbs don't even have curbside recycling pickups. This results in many recyclable items being thrown away. Making recycling more convenient would help promote recycling in general.
