Now It's Time for Action!

All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.

Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?

Worm Warnings

christine-o-usa

In a recent study by the Scientist magazine, a very hungry worm species is now invading the U.S. The New Guinea flatworm has taken root in Mainland Florida. If conditions are right, the worm will reproduce quickly and adapt to feed on native snails. The flatworm has also invaded New Caledonia, Puerto Rico, Singapore, and other places. It affects the ecosystem by putting it out of balance. A snail's job is to recycle organic material, which, in turn, becomes healthy soil. Without healthy soil, plants would not be able to survive. There would be a downfall in crop harvests, and without a plant to hold the earth together, land would be susceptible to erosion leading to disasters like the Dust Bowl. It would be impractical to go and try to kill each flatworm individually, but we have to do something to protect the snails. What should we do? Maybe there is a pesticide that we can synthesize to repel the worms without causing harm to the other inhabitants.
