Now It's Time for Action!

All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.

Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?

Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!

Now It's Time for Action >

It's the little things that count

Our society needs to understand what is going on in our planet. We are the cause of the destruction of our ecosystem, we are the reason that this is happening. We need to make a change now before matters become worse; we ned to take care of our ecosystems before it gets worse. We can’t leave our trash behind and expect someone else to do clean up after us, we are old enough and mature enough to look back and make sure that our own area is clean. Even though as teenagers we can’t necessarily clean an entire country, that doesn’t mean that we can’t change the personal area around us. We can start by cleaning up after ourselves, our homes and even our schools. It’s the little things that count and if we all start to do this we will see a positive change.

I agree with you. When we all help to clean up the world, it will make a huge difference. As teenagers, we get lazy and tend to leave our trash sitting around, but if all of us started to pick up our trash and correctly sort it, we could make a difference.
Last year in one of my classes, we did a project to motivate our student body to pick up after themselves and throw their trash away in the right bins. One day, we went to the cafeteria after lunch to see how much trash was left behind, and it was disgusting. There was so much trash laying everywhere. We need to clean up after ourselves not only for our world, but also out of respect for the people who have to clean up after us, like cleaning services or our parents. We need to take responsibility because we are the next generation, and we can be the generation that changes the world for the better.

No we can't completely clean a country because adults don't want to listen to us but we are the next generation! We are going to be the next presidents the next congress the next rule making generation and people need to understand that we need to take a stand. We need to do something to make a difference because it doesn't start with us letting everyone else start something it starts with us making a difference. Its up to us we can either keep destroying the environment or we can stop it and help it.

Mercedes,
I couldn't agree with you more! Humans are the number one destruction of the ecosystem, honestly I was kind of blinde to what was really going on with the ecosystem until I took the environmental science class I am in now. I know now that the little things do count, I've started to ride my bike to school, and even getting better with recycling. It is hard to change old habits but if everyone was more informed and could realize how much the little things do count I think we could defiantly see some positive changes within the environment.

Mercedes has made a valid point. If more people cleaned up after their immediate area then the world would be a much cleaner place. Waste accumulates quickly when it is left on the ground. One of the big problems in high schools is gum. It is everywhere from desks to tables and it gets stuck on people's shoes. To solve this dilemma, there should be trashcans placed where they are needed. This would eliminate the incentive to litter.

I can't help agreeing with you, the little things do count. We need regular citizens to start being more climate change cautious. It's true that enough little changes do pay off, for example if everyone in the United States went vegetarian for a single day, they would prevent 1.2 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions. But we have to understand that not everyone can afford to make even the smallest changes, think about how difficult it would be to unplug every appliance in your house every time you left. Also the fact of the matter is that the small things we do, only has so much worth. Say we do prevent 1.2 million tons of carbon dioxide for one day, their is still over 10 billion tons being emitted every year. We need big political leaders to get involved, climate deniers in congress need to get on other nations level and realize we have an issue. Immense evidence suggests climate change to be a problem; fossils in the Cenozoic, increased temperature, ocean acidification, and glacier's melting all point to our grim ending. Unless we make big change, that our official s must lead, our future does not look bright. I understand that great reform is not that simple in our government. But if they can start with small steps such as tax incentives or increased care on green house gas emissions then we could greatly curb the carbon excreted into the air. So yes the little things do count but we also need larger change.

All these comments make great points. I especially like the talk of us, as teenagers, being the next generation. Though climate change will not destroy us, each generation feels it more than the previous. Though, it isn't just cleaning up after ourselves that we need to work on. We need to tackle everything we do that causes high CO2 emissions. Turning the lights off when we leave a room, not wasting food, cutting down on how much we use cars to get places. Most of all, we need to get word out to everyone, including teenagers. So many people like to turn a blind eye to the effects we have on the world and the imminent devastation that will be caused by climate change. Mostly because we cannot see it effecting us. It will though, and we need to start remedying the situation now.

I completely agree. Its sad to see many tables covered with trash after lunch is over. Seeing the janitors pick up after Juniors and Seniors is the saddest thing. If you can't pick up after yourself and recycle your trash, how are you going to lead the next generation into the right path.

I completely, undoubtably agree. We have the ability to, at least, clean up our schools and homes a bit more, because especially in places like where I live, no one really cares enough to clean up because they're either too lazy or they simply don't care. We could start with things like that to save our planet and whatnot, then we could move onto "bigger" things, like perhaps walking to places instead of driving to them if that would be possible more often, or even just remembering to always turn off the lights. It is most definitely the little things that count. The Earth is such a precious place, and we cannot let ourselves sit by and be ruined by our own little actions.

genboatwright

I agree with this post. I think that sometimes we do not see the long term effects of our everyday actions. For example, every time that we leave the lights on, we are using energy. It may not seem like we are doing anything, but the energy use builds up and so does our carbon footprint. I agree we the next generation must pay attention to the small things to make a change.

michelled05

Very well said!! We can't fix the world but we can try by fixing what we can around us. Recycling and planing trees or gardens is something everyone can do. It starts with you!!

I agree with all of these suggestions of how we need to take action in our lives, since we are the next generation. But what about everyone else? We need to take one step further than changing how we live. It is important that we educate everyone about what it is we are doing that is hurting the environment. Most people don't think twice about taking the trash out every week, and what kind of impact that is having on the environment, and then they are shocked and appalled by the Pacific garbage patch. We need to educate people on how they can change their lives to better the environment, and then encourage them to spread that information. This can create a wave of education, and more and more people will have the knowledge necessary to make a difference. We have to do more than making a difference in our own lives, we need to inspire people to make a difference in theirs.

Your statment is so perfectly said. It's the small actions that count and most of the society needs to understand that the small actions DO count. Maybe it's not visible now, but it will later in in life.

Hi! My name is Paulina!
I'm totally agree with you, first if everyone do a small change it can became a big one and if we allways do our best efford we can make everything became true. Yes we need to start thinking that everyone needs to clean the world and be conscious about it. The pollution or trash is in our world, it doesn't matter who make it, you can clean it and you should.
