Now It's Time for Action!

All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.

Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?

Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!

Reducing My Carbon Footprint

gracem123

When I calculated my Carbon Footprint, I found that three big factors in my carbon footprint were transportation, the amount of trash being thrown away in my household, and my showers. Trying to conserve the energy used for transportation is difficult, because some of the places that I need to go are across highways and busy streets that could not be crossed on foot. However, since the factor that most affected my carbon footprint was, "going out with friends," it would be simple to just meet with my friends in areas closer to me, or carpool with them to get to activities. For the amount of trash being thrown away, I could either buy things in bulk to reduce packaging, or buy less pre-prepared food that has far more packaging then simple ingredients. Reducing my shower time was the easiest to do. When I switched from taking 11-15 minute showers to taking 5-10 minute showers, the carbon output for my showering changed from 1144 kgs to 661 kgs. Additionally, when I factored in all of the changes that I have discussed above, my carbon footprint changed from 7,789 kgs to 6,2 27 kgs. That's a difference of over a thousand! By making simple, everday kind of changes to our lifestyle, we can really reduce how much carbon we output on the world!

Hi, Grace, I do too believe that carpooling or even just walking with friends to hang out is a much better alternative than riding multiple cars- it would drastically reduce one's footprint and thus help our environment.
