What do we drink?
I love water. I prefer to drink water over any other drinks such as juice or sodas. However, I used to live in Bangalore, India where water was a privilege, for a majority of the population, so most of the time my options to drink clean water were limited. I was lucky enough to be provided clean drinking water during my time there, but when I moved to the United States, I truly realized the superior quality of drinking water we have compared to many individuals living in third world countries. In the United States, many filtration systems are available and are not very costly. But, since water supply in India is limited and not very advanced, I was always advised to not drink tap water as it could possibly contain life threatening bacteria and chemicals. Until my family could find a reliable filtering system, we would boil our tap water in order to drink it. Not only did this require a lot of use of fuel and cooking equipment, it did not taste very good and I became aware of the serious issue me and millions of others faced. Although my family did eventually install a fi ltering system, this was an issue that thousands of people who cannot afford filtering systems still face. Not only does filtering water through boiling it waste fuel, it does not guarantee that serious bacteria and protozoans would be eliminated. What do you think could be a solution to the drinking water crisis in third world countries, that are inexpensive and effective?
