Now It's Time for Action!

All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.

Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?

Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!

Climate change is a hotly debated political topic, one that seems completely one sided at first glance. But with a light peruse of the statements of the political opposition to climate change, it seems as if people have convinced themselves that it is untrue. They say they haven't felt it, that it was just cold yesterday, even that it is a hoax invented by the Chinese.
But why? Is the nearly unanimous scientific support for climate change not enough? When looking deeper, the truth becomes painfully obvious. In my eyes, it is not the misinformation and lack of education that makes Politicians believe what they believe, but another force - special interests.
If a major bill that cut down emissions and controlled our rampant abuse of the environment, the organizations that would be affected would be Exxon Mobile, Chevron, Valero. These companies make countless billions by destroying our environment. Exxon Mobile and its customers have emitted a total of 21.53 Billion tons of of carbon equivalent. With a B. All while making a cool 268.88 Billion a year. Every year the y spend an estimated 10 million dollars to make sure the moolah keeps pouring in (It is likely they spend many times this amount - we just can't chart it). Exxon, Chevron, and Valero all importune politicians with hefty donations to work against laws and regulations that would reduce climate change - laws that would reduce the size of their pocketbooks. These politicians then use this money to run multi-million dollar ad campaigns to 'educate' the voters about 'the hoax' that is climate change. Citizens then see these advertisements, and are misinformed and swayed, and continue to misinform and sway others. This corrupt, and disgusting institution is the main problem we see with the disbelief in climate change.
This chain is something that must be inhibited. There must be a solution. Luckily, I believe there is (I wouldn't write this post if I didn't think there was one). This discussion board itself is playing a part in solving the problem. What we need is to educate one another on the dangers of climate change, and we must combat the efforts of these corrupt puppeteers at the top. If we are all educated on climate change, then the ad campaigns and work of politicians will fail, we will vote in other politicians (who are probably corrupt in some other way but that's besides the point) who want to change the picture, and they will in turn pass much needed bills that I sound kind of crazy with all of this stuff, like some guy spouting a bunch of fear mongering untrue bologna. But crazy stuff is happening, and we need to stop it. Hopefully one of my peers reads this post, so that they can realize that them going through the board really makes a difference.
