Now It's Time for Action!

All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.

Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?

Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!

Change in Travel

After calculating my total carbon footprint, I saw that my amount of travel had the biggest impact. This year, I traveled to Phoenix and Montréal. These trips were very spread out, so I didn't realize how much traveling I was really doing. For the sake of the environment, I am definitely willing to change my habits of travel.
In an article I read on shrinkthatfootprint.com, I learned that travel footprints mostly emerge from cars or long airplane flights. My flight to Phoenix was not necessarily a long one, but I travel to Phoenix at least once a year to visit my cousins, and in total, the amount of flights I have taken to Phoenix add up to a large footprint. Even though it is hard to compromise visiting my family, I am willing to do so because I recognize how great of an environmental impact these flights have. Long flights cause large amounts of toxic gases to be released into the air, which results pollution and destroys our environment. I simply have to travel less in order to reduce my total footprint.
My family also takes at least one yearly trip for a relaxing v acation, and this year we went to Montréal. These trips help me relax and spend time with my parents, but I now realize that they are one of the biggest contributors to my total footprint. Our trip to Montréal this year was a long six hour flight, and twelve hours round trip. According to shrinkthatfootprint.com, the article that I previously mentioned, long airplane trips like these are ones that have the greatest impact on travel footprints. To reduce my footprint, my family and I should try our best to not travel long distances for a relaxing vacation, and instead we should stay in town. At the least, we could choose shorter destinations for our vacations, such as Los Angeles. Reducing my travel footprint will be challenging for me because travel is something that I enjoy, but I am more than willing to sacrifice my amount of travel in order to reduce my total footprint.

It is very interesting that traveling uses a lot of carbon compared to only using your personal vehicle to travel. I don't travel a lot and haven't traveled since a lot of time but I still had a higher foot print than the average person in my region (Guatemala). I'm actually glad I haven't traveled a lot in a long time since it would increase my carbon footprint like yours. I have 1,700 kgs in transportation and I think it would be much much higher if I traveled in plane.

It actually surprised me that your travel footprint had the biggest impact. It did, since I believe that the transportation through car is the most common, and the one that most damage produces in our environment, since people use it almost daily, and at least in my country, get to everywhere they need to be by car.

Henna, I can connect to your issue of transportation because, like you, it was the largest contributor to my carbon footprint. Especially living in the Bay Area, almost everywhere we go we drive and there is a lot of traffic as well. Due to this concentration of cars, the amount of traffic causes people to be in their car with the engine running for longer periods of time, so more exhaust is being produced.
I also have traveled this past year to places not to far from home such as Palm Springs and Dallas, my farthest trip probably being to Chicago, however it had a serious impact on my carbon footprint. Like you said, I think it is important to be aware of how we contribute to our environment even in our daily lives. Often, I think we don't consider how relaxing or going on vacations can actually impact our environment even if they allow us to unwind and spend time with other people. While I do agree with probably limiting travel, I think it is also inevitable that people will still fly very often due to its convenience the type of world and society we live in where we c an go to places hundreds or thousands of miles away fairly quickly and unfortunately it does have a significant impact on the environment.

I also found that my carbon footprint was greatly impacted by my amount of travel this year. I ended up flying to Southern California a few times, and I flew across the country as well. While I do not normally fly this often annually, I do fly at least twice each year, and after looking at the data provided on my carbon footprint, I can predict that there would still be a fairly large impact.
I knew that air travel caused a lot of pollution, but I was shocked at how much a few flights can negatively impact the environment, and when you think about how many flights there are every day around the world it's even scarier.
I am part of the Sustainability club at my school, and while we encourage students to carpool and take public transportation, air travel has not really been one of our focuses, I think it's because a lot people are not aware of how much pollution is emitted by planes, and if they are only flying two or three times each year, they may not recognize air travel as a source of transportation that they need to reduce. I am hoping that this year my club can imp lement air travel into our transportation initiative. Spreading the word about this environmental issue may make people think twice about flying as often.

I also found that the biggest category that impacted my footprint the most was transportation. I had more than the average person. I fly in airplanes almost every year and I went on this really long road trip last year. I can change this by traveling less, and maybe I can carpool to school and afterschool activities.
Travel can also cause pollution which is bad. Some people I know go on an airplane and big road trips each year! We can reduce our total footprint by spreading the word and tell people to limit themselves to less than 1 trip every other year. It would definitely help the air too.

I found this article on how air travel impacts climate change
"Issue Briefing: Impacts of Airplane Pollution on Climate Change and Health."Flying Clean. Flying Clean, n.d. Web. 29 Sept. 2016.
