All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.

Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?

Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!

Changing my Behavior

bracketta18

After calculating my carbon footprint, I realized that I have a much higher impact on the environment than I had previously imagined.  In order to lessen my impact, I researched some easy things I can do from the ‘Carbon Offsets To Alleviate Poverty’ website. For example, I can limit my water usage, sort out all of my waste, and buy organic and local foods. I usually shower 6 days a week, which can add up over time. Therefore, I can either try limiting my showers to around 5 minutes to lessen the amount of water I use, or I can shower less in general. Although I try to sort out my waste whenever possible, I often forget or am too lazy to do it. I read on this website that sorting my waste is extremely important, because it takes a lot of energy to get rid of trash, which can completely be avoided if I just recycle and compost. Lastly, I learned that many of the fertilizers used on farms are fossil fuel based, which is why people should buy food produced organically. Trying to change my behavior will be very difficult, just because I have become accustomed to my way of li ving. However, if I ever need insight or support, I can refer to my school’s sustainability director or other individuals who are involved with sustainable efforts for advice. It will be very beneficial to refer to one of these people, who lead by example and are very conscience of how they impact the environment.
