Now It's Time for Action!

All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.

Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?

Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!

Climate Control

marcoruffinelli

The Earth’s climate is continuously changing. The Earth’s surface is getting warmer due to greenhouse gas emissions that is trapping heat in the atmosphere, this is a situation caused by industrialization and mass production; requiring non renewable energy sources like fossil fuels, natural gas, and charcoal.  In the recent years there has been some global steps in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the Kyoto Protocols of 1997,  which introduced incentives to both developing and developed countries and made a program to give “carbon credits” based on lower emissions.  This event was attended by a two hundred or so diplomats, this event was then followed by other momentous conferences such as the Doha Agreement of 2012,  and most recently the Paris conference also known as COP21. COP21 included diplomats from 197 countries, that included massive polluters such as China and the U.S.
Accordingly, these conferences were set to reduce mass pollution and to maintain the heat increase under 2°C. Although the conference's main focus was to reduce pollution, the confere nce only seemed to skim over the fact that individuals are also a big contributor to releasing these gas emissions. To maintain generally low emissions, humans must reduce their carbon footprint, especially in first world societies. For example, in northern California there are very high recorded emissions; averaging around 15,000 kilograms or 33,000 pounds. Most of these carbon emissions come from transportation, meaning that there is a gargantuan consumption of fossil fuels. To reduce  most of these emissions many would have to travel less, or switch to a more Eco-friendly way of transportation, such as bike, electronic car, or public transportation. Although it might seem that the condition of the climate has worsened, there are still grand global steps that have been made to help.
