Now It's Time for Action!

All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.

Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?

Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!

Warming Ocean

TravisC

As I have read some articles about the ocean warming I began to wonder what this would do to our environment. There are some interesting facts about the ocean and our climate. The ocean stores 90% of the heat on Earth so what happens when the ocean stops holding all the heat from the radiation that is being trapped in our atmosphere. The world may not look like it is heating that much but at the current rate we are going, we are looking at a world wide heatwave. Also think about the animals and plants that live in the ocean. Many of those animals are not mammals and therefore cold blooded and when the ocean heats up these animals will not be able to adapt. This will cause the animals to die or have defects which will harm many countries where their main source of food is fish. Global warming in the ocean will be disastrous for the oceans.
There are a few ways to stop this. One is for governments to come together and limit the amount of CO2 emissions that are created in the world. This will help repair the Earth so the planet can cool down. Another is for governments  to subsidize clean energy so we can start replacing fossil fuels. This will create the same effect as the previous suggestion and may be easier to enact. The world has to start thinking about the environment before it is too late.

It is true that the ocean absorbs heat, but the ocean also absorbs 30% of the worlds carbon dioxide.  this is affecting plants and animals all around the world in oceans.  The massive amount of carbon dioxide that is being absorbed by the ocean is making the water acidic and it is starting to affect the species that live in the ocean.  The acidification of water has terrible affects like coral reefs being eroded away, coral reefs are a home to thousands of species and it would be devastating to the biosphere.

how is the ocean warming going to affect us as humans? there will be way less jobs in the future and a lot of the marine animals we know today will go extinct. we know its going to happen, yet we don't do anything about it. a lot of people don't care or just don't realize how big of an issue this is... so a lot of people that DO realize it are panicking and don't know what to do or where to start

Travisc, I definitely agree that climate change is affected many things in the ocean, and the ocean itself, here is how I think it is affected one specific thing in the ocean which are coral reefs.

Something I’ve always admired and have always thought was just amazing is the coral reefs. Ever since I was a little kid I wanted to go and visit coral reefs, especially the great barrier reef in Australia. But now because of the effects of global warming, sea levels are rising and my generation and the generations after me won’t be able to see these coral reefs because they are disappearing right in front of our own eyes. These reefs provide food and jobs to millions of people and are essential for our world. We all need to work together to help save the coral reefs.

Climate change is definitely not helping how the coral reefs in the ocean. The temperature has been rising up and up century after century and it is affecting these reefs in a big way. According to the NOAA, (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) these rising temperatures result in coral bleac hing, which is when the algae gives the coral a color which is white. This bleaching of coral can give them a greater risk of disease and more stress, which gives them a lot greater chance to die. Over ⅓ of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is taken in by the ocean, which makes the ocean more acidic. Ocean acidification slows down the rate for reefs to make limestone, which is something they need in order to grow. Sea levels rising and the increased amount of carbon dioxide in the air are just a few of many reasons why coral reefs are on their way to disappearing.

While it may seem like there is nothing we can do to stop global warming from deeply damaging these reefs, we have many solutions. Instead of taking a car to school or a friends house, we could take the bus, walk, ride bikes, etc. This would reduce the emissions of cars that go into the atmosphere, then into the ocean. There are other ways we could help reduce emissions, but this is a simple thing that all kids around the world can do. If every kid around the world did this, the difference in the emissions in the atmosphere could be huge.

Travisc, you are totally right. Climate change has affected the ocean in many ways. Even the ocean itself. I think that climate changed something very important which  is the sea level.
The ocean is very important to our Earth. It holds 96.5% of all the water on earth, but now the effects of global warming are causing the sea level to rise. As a child I always loved the ocean. From going to the beach, scuba diving, and riding waves. Now that global warming is becoming a more and more serious issue all of us should work together to make the change now before it is too late.
Climate Change is very much real and active. It is a very serious issue and is causing sea levels to rise at a tremendous rate. According to NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)  the sea is rising at a rate of .6 inches per decade since 1900,but ever since 1992 the level of sea rising has doubled to 1.2 inches every decade according to the satellite altimeters. The rising of sea levels rising is mainly caused by two factors 1. The warm ocean due to the overall higher global temper ature. 2. Ice melting over land. For example: glaciers and ice-sheets. If we do not fix our habits then the rising of the sea level can cause flooding, hazards from storms, and erosion. This can also cause storms to push more inland that an area with a lower sea level.
In order to prevent the sea levels from rising even more we can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide we release. Some solutions to reducing your carbon footprint is to always recycle, compost vegetable scraps, carpool, walk more, and unplug electronics when they aren’t being used. Everybody around the globe should try to reduce their carbon footprint. If everybody can work together a put a little bit of an effort to change the world it will happen. We can reduce the amount of storms happening, prevent floods, and keep land from erosion. If we do not change our habits the sea level will rise 1-4 feet by the year 2100 according to NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). The change would be huge.

yes you guys are all right but warming oceans and rising sea levels are also a big disaster waiting to happen. Here's what I've found

Climate Change Flooding

Climate change is real. No matter what the politicians saying that it’s the world's biggest hoax and what not, it’s real, it’s here and it’s causing damage right in front of our own eyes. The fire’s in Santa Cruz guess who that is, Climate change. The terrible blizzards last year, climate change. It’s real, it’s here and I want to talk about a very deadly effect of climate change and that is flooding.

Now you’re probably thinking oh he means like three inches in my basement right? No i mean the kind that can get chest high and drag you under the surface and can drown you, that’s the kind I mean. Global warming means that the earth’s atmosphere is getting warmer, and there are more greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. Since our atmosphere is getting warmer it means it can hold more water than it could ever before. Also the hotter temperatures are melting our oceans seas so the sea levels are rising as well.  So what does this mean? It means that when it rains, sense the clouds can hold more water it rains a lot harder, and with the rising ocean levels, more coastal towns and rivers are getting flooded with water. Look at Louisana as an example, it rained thirty one inches in just three days! This is because of the atmosphere being able to hold more water, and since the sea levels rose many coastal cities and towns were flooded all the way to their rooftops.

This is a big issue especially because many big cities like New York, London, Venice, and many more are extremely close to the sea’s water level. With the sea levels continuing to rise  these cities are very likely to start to get flooded way more often and eventually get submerged. The only way to stop this from happening is to get all the countries together to make a strong plan to combat Global Warming and if we can do that then we stop all these cities from being submerged and save countless lives. This is why climate change is real and it must be stopped before the unthinkable happens.
