Now It's Time for Action!

All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.

Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?

Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!

Climate Change Effects on Earth

tdoherty

The Earth naturally has has a process called the greenhouse effect which keeps heat from the sun inside the atmosphere. This is good because it keeps the Earth warm enough for humans and other animals to live. But, because there is extra unnatural carbon dioxide being released into the air it causes climate change, or global warming. This extra carbon dioxide is from the coal and other fossil fuels burned to use our cars, heating system, and computers. This is bad because it is changing our climate every day by making our earth warmer, melting ice to make oceans rise, and making flowers bloom sooner. This also causes snow to melt earlier, and makes the birds not have to fly as far south for winter. Because of this we will experience more flooding, droughts, and heatwaves which will cause more diseases, wildfires, and food/water shortages.
Not only will the facts stated above happen sooner rather than later, but entire ecosystems and species of animals will become extinct as well. But, we are working right now to make the earth green again by putting less carbon dioxide  into the atmosphere. To do this we are making electricity from solar and wind power and using cleaner transportation options. We can use public transportation, ride bikes, and use cars that burn cleaner gas or even run off of electricity. People can also turn off personal devices like the computer, lights, or T.V. when not in use.
