Now It's Time for Action!

All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.

Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?

Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!

The Possibilities of Nuclear Fusion

charlotteh_usa

One of the most pressing problems of this age is the limited amount of fossil fuels. With the amount of these nonrenewable natural resources declining rapidly, sources state that we’ll probably run out of them between the end of the twenty first century, or the century after that. So, to try and fix this problem, alternate forms of renewable energy must be adopted before we’re too late, and run out of the fuel still necessary to research other options for power.

According to recent studies, the most promising alternate form of renewable energy (despite still being very unstable and technologically impossible as of now), is nuclear fusion energy. It sounds like a fantasy, (Absolutely not because it’s practically straight out of Star Trek, but that’s beside the point.) but is actually a semi-probable possibility for the next main source of power. Solar, geothermal, wind, hydroelectric, etc., could all work if they’re harnessed correctly, and made to be more efficient, but for long-term effectiveness and efficiency, the success of developing a controlled nuclear fusion rea ctor (Cold/Thermo) could change the world.

“Nuclear fusion: A nuclear reaction in which atomic nuclei of low atomic number fuse to form a heavier nucleus with the release of ENERGY.” (-Definition of Nuclear Fusion) Fusion is what happens inside of stars; atoms of matter are heated up to ridiculously high temperatures, put under a lot of force, and 'fused' together to create a new element with a higher atomic number. (Ex: Hydrogen to Helium) The heat and necessary attractive force to overcome the two atoms' repulsion against each other must be applied in a controlled environment, less the atoms explode. (Like in stars and suns) If successful, the fusion causes a massive outburst of energy.

Said energy is the power scientists are hoping to harness. Even though we barely have any information about this power source, and are hardly scratching the surface of its potential, the chance of a cleaner, renewable resource to replace fossil fuels is worth the time and effort being put into its research and discovery.

Nuclear Fusion is a clean way to get tons of energy! I know that "there are 60 commercially operating nuclear power plants with 100 nuclear reactors in 30 states in the United States", according to the EIA (Energy information Association), and that "Four new nuclear reactors are actively under construction". In 2015 around 20% of the US's electricity came from nuclear energy (Info. from the Nuclear Energy Institute), and many other countries are becoming dependent on nuclear energy, too! (Such as: Hungary, Switzerland, South Korea, and France). The world is combatting global warming and pollution by using nuclear energy!
