All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.
Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?
Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!
Now It's Time for Action >
It's Been Time to React for a While Now
Now is the time for action, and it has been for some time now. We should have taken more action as soon as we learned of climate change, but what stopped us? I believe many people do not think they can do much to help. They may think that they are only one person, so what can they do? For anyone who thinks like this, you CAN make a positive change in the world.
The Arctic is melting, sea life is being damaged by acid, climate change is bringing havoc to everyone, many species are endangered, and sea levels are rising. We can do so many positive actions to help the environment. One of the very first actions we can take is learning about climate change and its effects. Once we fully realize the importance of this, we can make better actions in the future. There is something called the “danger zone”, which is 2 degrees celsius. If the world enters the danger zone, 30% of animals will go extinct. We must all seriously realize that this is not a scam, a joke, or made up. According to glaciologist Jason Box, scientists are reluctant to urgently speak of the dang ers of climate change. There are many factors for this, including public scrutiny. This link shows many interesting facts and articles are climate change and their effects: https://ww2.kqed.org/lowdown/2015/11/30 … qualities- of-climate-change-visualized- in-one- fascinating-map- and-6- other-great- interactive-resources/
We can help the Earth by becoming more aware of how much carbon we are letting out into the atmosphere. Turning on a light, TV, and car let out CO2. Saving water, reusing plastic bags and bottles, recycling, composting, and turning off the light every time we leave a room are actions we all can take to help minimize our CO2 emission. There are so many positive actions we can take to help our Earth. We may not be the president, but that should not stop us from making a meaningful difference.
Education is especially key in our fight against the harmful effects of climate change. Actually, education is the key to solving a lot of issues in society--the more you educate yourself about a topic, the more we can do to protect ourselves against it or prevent it from happening. I don't think it makes sense for scientists to be reluctant when sharing the dangers of climate change. Too many people aren't aware of issues, which is why they aren't being fixed. If the facts are watered down, the solutions will be watered down. I think that if our society blasted exactly what we're doing to our world as much as they do ads for alcohol, we'd see a much bigger shift in our carbon footprint.
