Now It's Time for Action!

All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.

Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?

Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!

How to Improve Our Carbon Footprint

jhermoso

As I calculated my carbon footprint, I realized how much I affect the earth in a harmful way. I also realized that I couldn't be the only one, and we can all stop habits we have and improve our environment.  We all can do as little as turning off the lights when you leave a room and participating in recycling and reusing. Whenever possible, you can walk or bike to places instead of using fuel to power your car. We can use energy efficient appliances in our homes, such as LED Lights, and we can also manage our thermostat and water use wisely. We can also reduce our carbon footprint through the food we eat by eating more locally produced and organic food, and gradually cutting out beef and dairy. Many resources are used to transport food and raise animals, so by eating this way, we can help reduce our carbon footprint. Although production won't stop just because one person decides to live this way, but together, we can change habits that many have. By doing this and more, we can individually improve the world we live in one step at a time.

I agree that there are so many ways to reduce our carbon footprint.  I think so many people think of this as a huge and scary task to take on, and while it can easily be perceived that way, another way to look at it is all the small ways we can reduce our carbon footprint that can make a big difference, such as turning off the lights when possible and using water wisely.

I agree with this topic. My carbon footprint was way more than I estimated it to be. This made me realize that I am harming the environment rather than helping it. The section where my carbon footprint was well above average was the transportation section. According to cotap, when you are flying on an airplane it is better to fly economy class because each passenger's share of carbon emissions is much less because it is spread out over more people. Prince William of England is aware of his carbon footprint and flies economy to reduce his footprint. Another way to reduce your carbon footprint when traveling is to carpool or take the bus. Every day, I carpool with 2 other people when going to and from school. This reduces my carbon footprint significantly because I divide the carbon emitted by the car with 2 other people. Therefore, I am reducing my carbon footprint for transportation by a third. These are just 2 of the many ways to reduce your carbon footprint. Source I used:

I agree that with you. My carbon footprint was over double the amount of an average carbon footprint. It made me realize how much I was hurting the environment. Carpooling is a great way to reduce the transportation part of my carbon footprint. Recycling helps to get rid of waste in an eco-friendly way. Less severe changes can also be made. Little things like even just turning out the lights as you leave the room can make a huge difference. These little things can make a big difference in ones carbon footprint.
