All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.
Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?
Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!
Now It's Time for Action >
Recycling
I have a behavior where I will not think when I'm throwing away my trash, and I will throw items that could have been recycled in the waste bin. I know this is bad for the environment, so I'm planning on changing this bad habit. According to gov.je, "Recycling reduces the need for extracting (mining, quarrying and logging), refining and processing raw materials. All of these create substantial air and water pollution. As recycling saves energy it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which helps to tackle climate change." This might be a challenge for me because I tend to forget, but if I give myself reminders, such as writing a not on my trash can, I think it would be a lot easier.
Wow. I agree with you. I struggle with the same issue. I don't think when I'm throwing away trash and I forget that what I threw away could have been recycled. This mentality is what is harming the environment. We as people need to realize our behavior is detrimental to the Earth and already causing long-term negative affects on our planet. Not only is it harming earth, but its completely wasteful. According to "Keep America Beautiful" if everyone in America recycled one plastic bottle, the materials could make more than 54 million T-shirts. Also according to reports by Recycle Across America, if the U.S. alone reached a recycling level of 75%, 1.5 million new jobs could become available. These are just statistics on America alone. If these small differences can make a big impact in America, imagine how much it could change the world.

It's amazing how recycling could change the world if we really could stick to it, and not be careless in throwing away things.
I definitely agree with you all that recycling can make a huge change in our carbon footprint. I know that I am one who doesn't think when a thing can be recycled or not. I usually just put it in the trash. This problem can be solved by clearly labeling the trash cans and the recycling bins, that way we know the difference between the two.
I totally agree with you. I too have the same problem with not realizing what I am throwing away. If everyone could recycle a little more every day we could definitely contribute to preserving our environment. Recycling is a great way to eliminate the thought of wasting. Labeling trashcans and recycling bins is a great start to keeping our planet healthy.
I think that it is important to recycle, my family always leaves a bag next to the trash that is just for recycling.
I believe that it is very important to recycle. My house and school both have certain places to recycle and are very conscious about it. I always make sure to recycle when I can.
I also believe it is very important to recycle. Both my family and school have recycling bins all around to use.
