All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.
Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?
Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!
Now It's Time for Action >
A critic to our society: can we really change?
I was just wondering if our society can really change...
If we think about the things that we can do to waste and pollute less, which one are we really willing to do?
For example, car sharing: this initiative could be really reduce the pollution caused by cars, but how many people are doing it? Car sharing is maybe the easiest way to give a contribution, but people don't even want to do it, because... I don't know why! Most of the cars I see around are filled with one, two or at most three people, so there could be free space for other people that are making the same path. I can't really understand why car sharing isn't socially acceptable for a lot of people.
Another example, pet bottles: in most european countries, water is drinkable everywhere, but people, instead of taking a bottle from home and fill it from fountains or sinks during the day, buy a new plastic bottle everyday. It's such a useless and senseless waist! We're so lucky to have good water (even more in Switzerland), but people keep buying bottled even if it's not better. Bringing around a bottle to fill could be another easy way to help reduce the consume of plastic, but somehow, like with the carsharing, people seem to ignore it.
There are so many examples that show how lazy people are, even the most simple things that could help, are often ignored.
I don't kmow which could be the first step to make these easy ecological purposes popular, but we have to find it soon, because the planet can't wait too much.
There are so many little things that we can do without effort to reduce the pollution, but it seems that the society can't change... in the future, with the help of the governement and other organisations, "little easy ecofriendly-intervention" will be highly reccomended and maybe also a must, and the society will start changing.
I agree with you. There are so many solutions people can begin applying to their lives now, but rarely anyone does them. Taking action is not the discussion of what we can do to positively affect our environment. The real debate is how to get people to take action in the first place. Most people don't take action because they don't see the effect first-hand, and people do not believe the pollution will effect them individually. To change this mindset, we should have community gatherings to clean the ocean or to clean other areas of the environment so people can see the damage we are causing themselves.
