All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.
Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?
Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!
Now It's Time for Action >
No Time to Waste
Many people have been proposing laws, regulations, and actions that will help climate change eventually, or years from now. However, many sources lately such as the Washington post are telling us that we "the world has just over a decade to get climate change under control." Instead of making cars that have low carbon emissions expensive, there needs to be a way so that not only a small portion of the population can even have access to something like this. Carbon emissions from any of our actions must be stopped by actual laws, rather than individuals trying to reduce their carbon footprint.
Many people, students especially, have been trying to help combat climate change by posting on social media, wearing certain clothes in support, or maybe participating in marches. All of these things are very important to raise awareness, but they do not make change in actual carbon changes in our environment. In order to really make change, we have to press for laws that actu ally prohibit use of certain burning of fossil fuel, it is the only way people will actually feel the need to follow a rule.
I agree with everything you said. People have been advocating for climate change in ways that will have small affects on the actual problem at hand. By posting on social media and speaking out about climate change, people are raising awareness, but not much is being done. Laws aren’t being passed that encourage companies and everyday citizens to take action in reducing their carbon footprints, and little change is being made. Climate change has detrimental affects on our planet. According to scientists at NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council), if we do not reduce global carbon emissions by as much as 40% by 2030, we will be at risk of a global catastrophe. In addition, the Washington Post says that by 2050, there might be a total or near-total phaseout of the burning of coal. The impacts of climate change will effect our society greatly. By making an effort to reduce your carbon footprint, you can do your part in helping prevent climate change. Unfortunately, not everybody is committed to changing their daily habits to lessen their carbon footprint. Our government nee ds to start passing laws that motivate people to do their part in helping climate change, since people will then be pressured to follow a state-wide rule. By prohibiting burning certain fossil fuels, building new factories in natural habitats, and carbon emissions from certain companies, our country can start doing our part to prevent climate change.
