What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?
925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Over consumption of Food
While 925 million on Earth are starving, there is a overabundance of food in many countries. Many food companies are making more than we need, and people buying and consuming an unnecessary amount, raising the amount of CO2. One third of our greenhouse gas emissions come from agriculture. From the fertilizers to manufacture to food storage and packaging, food production should be limited to reduce human's carbon footprint. We waste a lot of the food produced due to too large servings, and we store too much food at once. Food lasts much longer in today's society, which is not only unhealthy for us, but also leads to throwing a great deal of it away. This leads to a massive amount of waste in our landfills, that could be reduced. Growing as much of you can of your own fruits and vegetables that you will consume would limit the amount of energy it takes to produce and package the food industrially. Growing only what you need would also save money, produce healthi er foods, reduce CO2, and even reduce obesity if it causes people to lower serving sizes. Producing some of your own food does not solve all aspects of over consumption of food, but it is a step that can reduce it.
