In the Environmental Science Academy, students discuss potential solutions to our environmental problems. One major consequence is eating beef. Most people associate drastic climate change with transportation and home necessities. However, raising cattle has a larger role in Earth’s recent environmental setbacks. People should consider finding alternatives to beef because the carbon footprint for beef is severely larger than other meats (chicken and fish). In the meantime, the media should begin emphasizing the consequences of eating beef.

Plenty of other foods have protein, such as beans, lentils, and tofu. I know plenty of vegetarians who get enough protein and live very healthy lives.

I find myself eating very little meat, and I've cut out pork from my diet for 9 years now. Austin, does eating pork also have a severe effect on the environment?

I found this really interesting, because I have never thought about how raising cattle could be bad for the environment. According to this website, methane being released into the air is even worse than releasing carbon dioxide into the air. I agree that the media should emphasize the consequences of eating beef more because it's affecting global warming much more than most people think.

According to Time's Article, [Meat: Making Global Warming Worse](http://content.time.com/time/health/art … 95,00.html), 18% of green house emissions are from the livestock industry, which is 5% more than the emissions created by cars, trains, and other forms of transportation. The need for more meat, as the population grows, will arise, and this will cause even more emissions . In order to reduce the population's dependency on beef, and the green house emissions it causes, we'd have to first raise awareness through major media outlets. Eventually, when people stop eating as much beef, we'd be able to reduce the cattle business, but the world also needs to find new jobs for those who work in beef production. We may be very far from this point, but having people think about it on discussion websites like this shows that we are at least making some progress!
