What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?
925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Food Waste
Americans throw away one third of available food. Food waste, in the U.S. fills up hundreds of dumpsters each week. These mounds of food waste are not always spoiled. Much of it is surplus food amounts from grocery stores as well as food that we chose not to eat. The food that is wasted adds waste to landfills that add methane, a greenhouse gas, into our atmosphere. Methane is twenty-five times as strong as CO2. This is a problem we need to address because of its addition of methane to the atmosphere as well as several other problems you can learn about in this article: http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/201 … e-feds-say. Everything is big in Texas, especially our food portions. Many people do not finish the food they order at restaurants. This food is then thrown away and then placed in dumpsters and landfills. One way we could cut down the amount of food waste is by shrinking the size of our food p ortions. This would shrink the amount of wasted food. Those who do eat all there food and are still hungry can order more. Any more ideas for decreasing food waste?
Hello, I'm Fanai from China, what you said the food waste also is the big problem in China, most of restaurants implement the government policy---the Clean Plate Campaign. What do you think the possible personal solution that you can do?
Hi, my name is Zinnia from China. I read through all the things that you had written, and I am very agree with you. I learnt that the United States spends about 1 billion dollars a year just to dispose of food waste. And the US Department of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Agency announced their plan to tackle food waste in America. (http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2013/0 … e-climate/). It also a serious problem in China. In the cafeterias of many school, we can see students throwing away about 1/3 of the food. More and more people pay attention on the issue and try their best to change. Also we create a "Clean Plate Initiative". It advocates for zero food waste when dining out. I think it is one of good solution to solve the issue.
