Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

A Little Less Meat Won't Hurt

sydney-cherek

After doing some research I learned that meat lovers often have one of the higher carbon footprints. Eating just a little meat a day isn't a bad thing but it starts getting bad when you have meat for every meal. An easy solution to reduce your carbon footprint is to cut back on eating meats everyday. Only having meat every other day would be a great way to solve this problem. If you are interested in these diet habits check the link below for further research.

I agree that eating meat as your only food source can be bad for the environment and it can also be unhealthy. Eating a little of every food group is probably the best decision to do

I totally agree with your statement! Eating meat everyday is not good, you should really try vegetables and fruits every once in a while.

I definitely agree with your statement. The link that you had was a really great resource. I like how it shows the amount of CO2 for each type of meat and other foods. I can not believe that eating lamb is the equivalent to driving 91 miles in the car!

OMG !! I couldn't believe that eating lamb would be equivalent to diving 91 miles in a car.

We need to eat meat because it holds nutrients and vitamins that our body needs to properly function, but, I agree with you in the fact that you don't have to eat it with every meal and everyday. Meat has a lot of carbon in it because it came from a secondary consumer, and if you eat to much of it, it can cause health issues. Also, we don't want to kill off all of our livestock because we need them not only as a food source, but also as essential parts of our biosphere. Eating more fruits and vegetables will not only keep you healthy but they can also be used as natural detoxes for our body. Eating a mixture of all the food groups will help you be a healthier person.

I agree with you on how its not a good thing if we eat a lot of meat everyday since it will increase your carbon footprint a lot. My family probably eats meat 2 times a week. We eat a lot of vegetables at dinner and spaghetti because we are italian so pasta is a big in our family. On the other hand we do try and eat a variety of every food group a week.

I agree that eating a lot of meat can be bad for the environment and one's health. I didn't realize that eating meat could cause my carbon footprint to go up so much. I have definitely tried to cut back on meat (red meat especially) since seeing my carbon footprint. However, meat has a lot of nutrients that our bodies need and cutting back on it can be difficult. A lot of people who don't eat meat have to take extra vitamins and supplements to make up for the nutrients that meat provides, which long term can also be bad for the environment. Overall, making the decision to cut out meat completely from one's diet can be very difficult because of the pros and cons it has.

I agree, and I like how you kept a non bias standpoint. Facts do show that meat eaters have a much higher carbon footprint. Something I've learned is that, everything is okay, in moderation. I think a good way to keep down our meat consumption would be to limit the amount of meat we buy when we go shopping. Create a budget, something like "I cannot spend more than 20 dollars on meat this week". This will lower the footprint in both purchases and food.

I agree with your opinions, and even though meat is VERY important in a person's everyday nutrition, it would not hurt to cut back a bit.  I did research and it is true that people who eat lots of meat do have a much higher carbon footprint.  Lots of people do not know how much eating lots of meat can make your carbon footprint much larger than average.  So i think as a solution it should be more advertised by grocery stores and maybe through schools.
