What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?
925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Locally Grown Food - It's good for you and your environment!
I decided to do some research on why locally grown food is the way to go instead of buying food from outside of your town/state/country. I found out that when you buy locally grown food, you decrease dependence on petroleum which is a non-renewable resource. One-fifth of the petroleum used in the United States is used for agricultural purposes. When you buy and eat locally grown foods, you save energy that would have been used to package and transport those foods across the U.S. (or whatever country you live in). Locally grown food also tastes better and and is better for you. Studies show that fresh produce loses nutrients quickly when transported. On the other hand, local produce is fresher because it was probably harvested more recently, like within the last day or two. So, when buying locally grown foods you can be saving lots of energy and being a lot healthier at the same time!
