Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Traveling Food

We all know that traveling and transportation are huge problems when it comes to our carbon footprints, but we often don't consider the carbon emissions from transporting our food. Our food travels about 1500 miles from the farm to our plate (from this helpful link: http://www.cuesa.org/learn/how-far-does … your-plate). Buying locally-grown food is often a goal of everyone's, but we don't usually try very hard. Not a lot of food in the store is labeled with where it's from and we don't generally try to find out. If we see plums in the winter, we don't generally question it. We can increase how much locally-grown food we buy by going to farmer's markets and getting CSA boxes (community supported agriculture). My family has a weekly CSA and we get vegetables and fruit from it. It's grown only a couple hours from our house and is all organic. Not many people know about this opportunity when they really should. Not only is it better for the environment, it also tastes much better and encourages my family to eat more vegetables.
