Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Buffets

I used to go to buffets about once or twice a year. Whenever I'm at a buffet, I see this one table of 5-6 people who shovel food onto their plates and when they leave, most of the food is still there. Most of this food won't be eaten and will be thrown away.
I don't like the idea of buffets anymore. I would like if every restaurant had a serving size on menus.

I also think that we should steer away from buffets and that restaurants should have smaller, set portion sizes. I never realized how wasteful people are until I began working as a hostess at a restaurant. The portion sizes of our meals are huge and most of the time, people waste a majority of it. Not only do larger portions result in more food waste, but it also costs more money when the food we buy goes bad before it can be used. When I go to a restaurant and don’t finish my meal, I always ask for a to-go box. It amazes me how many people actually reject a to-go box when they still have a substantial amount of food left on their plates. I know that some restaurants charge an extra fee for food that is wasted. Maybe if more restaurants adopted this policy, people would be more conscious of their portion sizes and the food that they waste.
