Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

I think that a great way for food to last and hunger to diminish, is to reduce the way we eat and produce. When people are growing fruits and vegetables in mass quantities, that is wasting valuable natural resources that could have been saved. Americans waste 2.3 billion tons of food each year. If we stop producing and manufacturing products when they are not needed, then waste will drop drastically.

I agree! Also people look at expiration dates for lots of products and if it is close to the date, they choose to through away the product. The fact is that most foods are still good after there expiration date.

I completely agree! Not only do I think we need to focus on being less wasteful, but I also think we should be more conscious about the food that we are using. Trying to emphasize the locavore movement, and trying to buy products that use fewer pesticides (or maybe even growing your own food) could be great ways to reduce our carbon footprints.

Totally! Food is something that impacts a lot of different sectors of life. We often forget how attached food is to transportation and energy. I think an important step in becoming less dependent on certain types of energy would be to start encouraging more locally grown and produced foods. A rise in the consumption of local food would result in a decline in energy use.

I agree! We should also emphasize that people should also not only buy foods grown locally, but foods that are in season so that people can be getting the most natural and organic foods, not GMO foods.
