About 1.3 billion tons of food gets lost or wasted every year. This food takes energy to produce and ultimately contributes to the CO2 emissions put into the air each year. By cutting down on the amount of food that is wasted or lost, we could significantly reduce our the pollution produced into the atmosphere. If the food is no longer edible or usable, composting is a great way to help the earth. It reduces the amount of food in landfills, helps improve soil quality, and reduces the amount of chemical fertilizers used on plants, as compost is a natural alternative.

I really liked this how you gave some stats to how much food is wasted because it added a better perspective to this topic. Although I agree that composting is a good way to minimize waste and pollution from our atmosphere, I'm pretty sure that compost also emits CO2 and a little methane. This CO2 that is emitted adds to the problem of global warming. Composting has a carbon footprint too, which is unfortunate as it is a wonderful to reduce the amount of food that is wasted. At school we compost a lot and I think that that is really important in helping our earth with waste. I have no idea what would be an alternative to composting because the landfill as you said, is worse.

This presents a problem, although biofuel is a good fuel source and ways to recycle organic matter (compost), it does use a lot of power to produce, which then needs power resulting in emissions. So although it does have a quick and mostly unavoidable it does help overall and is a viable solution.
