Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Don't just throw it away and waste it.

Yup, throwing away food is like throwing away money

Throwing away food is a serious problem. Here in Guatemala, a large portion of the population suffers from extreme poverty and malnutrition. And the moment that people decided to throw their food, they are throwing away precious and valuable things that could make a huge difference in the average Guatemalan family. I believe that by not throwing away the food, one is helping the community around them, as well as their environment by reducing the waste amount they produce.

I agree that we need to stop wasting food. It bothers me when I see people get some food, eat a little bit of it, and just throw it away afterwards. My grandparents and parents used to be extremely poor, so nothing was every wasted. Instead of throwing away food, we could try being creative with leftovers (that's what my family does!) or just only buy/cook what you can eat.
