What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?
925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Food and Hunger
Many countries are suffering every day to get food on the table. First world countries are very successful but sadly, not every country is this way. In the United States, we are know to help people and we do. Unfortunately we can't just give countries money because of the debt we the United States are in already.(About 20 trillion dollars) which is a huge amount and we cannot let this number get any higher. However, I think that if other countries including the United States donate some food to them they would be very happy. Also if we get people in office like crooked Hillary then she will very well send 3rd world corrupt countries money which is a very bad thing. I am a believer that if you work hard you get what you want and I think the United States has already helped enough countries. We fight wars for people, give them what they want. It's time for a change. Other countries don't work hard enough for there people. We can help them some but they are going to have to help themselves.
Hunger is a huge problem in my country (Guatemala). Since it is a third world country there exists a lot of poverty and people are constantly in a state of malnutrition. Since it is not as developed the wealth is distributed amongst only a small percent of the population and the rest of the people live in poverty. It is very urgent for countries like mine to come up with effective ways of fixing this problem.

Hunger and Poverty
Causes: Hunger is one of the biggest world problems. It has extremes, from extreme obesity to malnutrition. The world produces more than enough food to feed everyone, so why are so many people going hungry? Poverty has a big effect on hunger. Fast food and unhealthy food is cheaper so many people can only afford this food if they can afford food at all. Eating lots of fast food can make you obese. Around 74% of the U.S. is overweight, which is a very bad thing. Obesity can easily lead to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, osteoarthritis, cancer: breast, colon, endometrial, kidney, and stroke. Malnutrition is just as bad and almost always ends in death.
So what causes this? Surprisingly, weather and climate cause the most hunger. According to the World Food Programme, “Drought is one of the most common causes of food shortages in the world.” This makes sense though because in a drought or natural disaster, nothing can grow and everything is destroyed (in a natural disaster). On top of that, deforestation (by humans) accelerates the erosion of the land that could be used for growing food.
Solutions: Almost half the world is living in a state of poverty, or close to it. Most of these countries are not developed which means wealth is not distributed to a big part of the population. A constantly changing economy, lack of education, epidemic diseases, and environmental issues are all factors that contribute to poverty. Poverty often leads to hunger, and this adds up on a bigger scale. Although it may seem like there is not much that can be done about this issue, every contribution helps.
Although this problem can’t be solved overnight, it is important to take it one step at a time. One thing many people can do to help is donations. Whether it be food or cash, donating even a little can aid organisations in raising funds to help. People living on donations cannot rely on that forever, and there are organisations to help impoverished families become self sufficient and afford the food that is necessary. Another way to help impoverished families living in urban areas, is urban gardening. Recently this has grown in popularity and this helps greatly.
Birth control education may seem off topic, but in reality many of these impoverished families were not educated on contraceptives or reproduction and therefore could not have the financial ability to support themselves. Overpopulation is a large factor into world hunger. Education in underdeveloped countries is crucial to ending world hunger because is provides opportunity for a stable life. In addition many of these people in underdeveloped countries do not have options because often these countries are at war, but if the people start to pressure their government into ending conflict there will be room to focus on the fundamental issues within the country. Overall the process to ending world hunger will be slow and difficult but over time it can be accomplished.
