What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?
925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Food waste at school
At school after every lunch we waste a lot of food. Also we don't throw away our food in the right trash bin. Most of the time students just throw their food or bottles away without thinking about where it goes after and how it destroys our environment. At school we should only get food that we can finish and make sure that we throw away our waste or recyclables in the right bin.
When I came to high school the first thing i noticed was the separate bins that every classroom has and I really like that about the school. We really try to save up and be resourceful about food. This school really celebrates Earth Day and it relates to the food waste. Im glad that we have separate bins so we can help the Earth be a better place.
I agree with your comment, however I feel that these seperate compost, landfill, and recycle bins should be in more places in our community. For example, at the two golf courses I practice at, there are only landfill bins and no option to recycle. This lack of variety causes people to throw away many more things that could've been recycled if it was available to them. If a large group of people brought this issue to the city council, maybe a change could be in place to better people's awareness of the importance of reusing and recycling.
I agree, I see lots of kids with full plates and they just throw it away.
At our school we have a tri-bin system, one being compost, one being recycling, and one being landfill. Although I'm sure there are kids who don't obey the bins, most of my friends and classes do. We also have one week where we compete to see how little waste we can have, and if we have a small enough amount of waste, we get a free dress day! I think this is a really effective way for schools to lower their Carbon Footprints
a lot of people don't like the school food and end up throwing it away, and if you know you don't like it then you shouldn't get it
i agree. a lot of food can be given to other places in need if its not needed in schools im sure homeless shelters or many other places can use them.
i agree bc we are lucky to have food bc some people in the world dont have any food
It’s true if people at school don’t like the food, they shouldn’t buy it. I think, what we can all do is bring our own lunches to school, this way, since we know about how much we eat, we won’t be tempted to just throw away the leftovers. Since we are packing our own lunches, we could also choose what we eat, and it could be healthier, taste better, and help the environment at the same time. Packing mostly fruits and vegetables keeps you healthier and could be eaten raw, unlike eating the soggy burgers served at school which may taste bad, is unhealthy, and uses a lot of energy and increases our carbon footprint, to cook or heat up the food. We can choose where we buy our food too, local food from farmers’ markets and certain grocery stores is less likely to have preservatives, and didn’t have to be flown from far away, which would have increased our carbon dioxide emissions.
Let’s say some people can’t bring their own lunch for one reason or another. You could still ask the school to provide organics or compost bins for the people who don’t eat or can’t finish their s chool lunch. This way, although they are still wasting food, it is separated from the trash and won’t just build up in the landfill. That food may become compost that will help plants grow. Also, the paper trays and cups and milk cartons could be recycled, again reducing how much unnecessary waste ends up in the landfills. If we all did this at our schools, recycle, compost, and bring our own lunches, we’d not only be lowering our CO2 emissions, but our school contributions could become habit that we continue at home and for the rest of our lives. I agree with your comment. People need to be more aware of what they are doing when they decide to throw away their leftover food. Taking your own food could help because when you pack your lunch, you know about how much you will want to eat so it helps with portion control.
