Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Food and Hunger

Hunger is a constant issue that we have on this Earth. A constant issue that we have anywhere. But this issue is caused by the lack of care that people have when throwing out food. Statistically, every year America wastes around 70 billion pounds of food and industrialized and rich countries together waste around 244 million tons a year which is almost as much as the food net worth that Africa has which is 254 tons. We need to make it a habit of eating everything that we buy because it is not only a waste of money but a huge waste of food. However, having zero food waste is quite hard and we understand that. That is why schools like Bishop O'dowd have already started putting out compost garbages all over their campus because we all know that food waste happens sometimes, but at least reuse it. Make our Earth green.

I completely agree with you in the aspect that food waste and hunger are major problems we need to address. As you stated, America produces about 70 million pounds of food waste yearly. A contributing factor to this being that about 25-40% of food grown, processed, and transported in America is not consumed. If we were to cut down this waste, we could potentially help the estimated 42 million people with insufficient supply of food as the amount of food waste is enough to feed at least 1 billion people.  I also consent to the idea that eliminating food waste is very difficult, but there are many actions we can take to help reduce it. As you said, is important to eat everything we buy and put on our plates. We can do this by reducing our portions of food and not eating after we are full. In addition to this, we can improve our organization system in our kitchens in a more efficient way. Most grocery stores use the system of FIFO, which stands for “First in, first out”. This refers to the organization of putting older products in the front and newer products in the back. W e can use a similar system in our own pantries and refrigerators to prevent the need to throw away food due to expiration dates. We can also donate extra unwanted food to organizations like Feeding America, who are able to supply the excess food those who are facing hunger. Things like this are ways that we can take action in our everyday lives, contributing to the improvement of our world and our lives.
