Meat has the greatest carbon emissions out of the various food choices, while a vegetarian diet emits the least amount. Eating chicken instead of beef can help decrease an individual’s footprint. Yet whether a person chooses beef or chicken or pork, animal products make up over half of his emissions from food. The documentary Cowspiracy provides valid statistics supporting the argument that the livestock sector (beef in particular) plays a major role in environmental degradation, pointing out how the amount of forests clear-cut for grazing and production adds to the CO2 levels while the increase in raising cows adds to the methane levels in the atmosphere. An effective societal policy on food might be regulation of meat production/consumption because the current demand in the United States is amazingly high, and we must make the population aware of the toll it takes on water supply and atmospheric conditions. Another important policy to implement might be requiring farmers and grocers to redistribute food in perfectly good condition that would have otherwise been thrown  away, such as when produce is deemed not aesthetically pleasing enough to sell.
