Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Fat vs. Sugar

When we go to the grocery store we see thousands upon thousands of food items. Behind them are marketers trying to get you to buy their food. There are usually many choices for the same product. The labels scream at you reduced fat, half the fat, or even fat free. But when you take the fat out of food, it doesn't taste as good. The companies know that, so what do they replace the fat with? Sugar. When they put in more sugar, they don't tell you directly. Sugar can hide in the form of many words such as fructose, maltose, high fructose corn syrup, and many more. We need sugar to function, but our bodies have its limits. When we consume more sugar then our body can handle, the liver turns the extra sugar into fat. So, when we are at the grocery store, we need to make sure that we take into the account ,not just the fat, but the sugar as well. The effects of having too much sugar can be just as bad or even worse than the effects of consuming too much fat. We must be  conscientious of both because they are huge factors in our diets.

Also, many of these foods with added sugar are processed and come from factories. We could avoid eating excess sugar by eating organic and naturally grown foods. This would burn less fossil fuels and we have have a better and more natural diet.
